PROCLAMATION
Disability Independence Day: July 26, 2026
July 26 marks Disability Independence Day, commemorating the signing of the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, landmark civil rights legislation that
affirmed the rights of people with disabilities and helped ensure equal access to
employment, public services, transportation, public accommodations, and community
life.
Disability Independence Day recognizes the ongoing work to promote accessibility,
inclusion, equal opportunity, and full participation for people with disabilities. It is also
a time to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and leadership of individuals with
disabilities who strengthen our communities every day.
The City of Columbia Heights is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive
community where all residents are treated with dignity and respect. Through continued
efforts to improve accessibility, remove barriers, and promote equitable opportunities,
the City strives to ensure that residents of all abilities can fully participate in civic,
recreational, educational, and community life.
Disability Independence Day serves as a reminder that accessibility benefits everyone
and that building inclusive communities requires ongoing collaboration, awareness,
and commitment. Columbia Heights proudly joins communities across the nation in
recognizing the importance of advancing independence, opportunity, and full
participation for all people.
I, Amáda Márquez Simula, Mayor of Columbia Heights, do hereby proclaim July 26,
2026 to be Disability Independence Day in the City of Columbia Heights, County of
Anoka, State of Minnesota, U.S.A.
