PROCLAMATION
Galdogob Sister City Day: July 1, 2026
The City of Columbia Heights proudly recognizes its Sister City relationship with
Galdogob, Somalia, established on July 1, 2023, to foster mutual understanding, cultural
exchange, and community connections across borders.
Columbia Heights is home to a vibrant and growing community of Somali Americans
who play an integral role in building our city — contributing socially, culturally,
politically, and economically to the place we all call home. The Sister City bond with
Galdogob reflects and honors that deep connection, standing as a testament to the
shared humanity that unites our communities across continents.
Like many immigrant groups before them, Somali Americans came to Columbia
Heights seeking safety, opportunity, and a better future for their families. Today, they
are woven into the fabric of our city, and their presence makes Columbia Heights
stronger.
In honor of this partnership, the Somali flag will be displayed in Columbia Heights City
Hall alongside the flag of our Sister City of Lomianki, Poland, as a symbol of our
commitment to global friendship and the diverse communities that make Columbia
Heights home.
I, Amdda Marquez Simula, Mayor of Columbia Heights, do hereby proclaim July 1,
2026, to be Galdogob Sister City Day in the City of Columbia Heights, County of
Anoka, State of Minnesota, U.S.A. In making this proclamation, the City of Columbia
Heights celebrates the enduring friendship between our two communities and honors
the contributions of Somali Americans who continue to enrich the life of our city.
