I was born and raised in Columbia Heights and have always been grateful to be part of this vibrant community.
The values of inclusivity and unity that Columbia Heights residents share is a unique experience that not every
city shares. I feel motivated to preserve and strengthen those values by contributing my experiences and
thoughtful leadership that reflects our community's diversity. I believe in sustainable practices and policies that
reflect the needs and priorities of our neighbors while enhancing the overall quality of life in Columbia Heights.
This community has played a significant role in shaping who I am today and the values I hold. As a Muslim
American student and aspiring leader, I bring important insight that reflects the diversity of our city. I believe
that representation matters, especially when decisions are made on behalf of a community of residents with
diverse backgrounds and experiences. I value transparency, inclusivity, and collaboration, especially when
decisions affect vulnerable or underrepresented populations. I am eager and motivated to serve Columbia
Heights through thoughtful and informed engagement and decision-making. I aim to contribute meaningfully
to the board of commissions' work by promoting policies and initiatives that promote the diversity, culture,
well-being, and empowerment of all Columbia Heights residents.
As a resident of Columbia Heights, I bring both lived experience and a deep understanding of the
community's values, strengths, and evolving needs. Growing up in Columbia Heights has allowed
me to understand the importance of collaboration, mutual respect, and civic engagement in
shaping a thriving city. I have met many of the city's council members and recognize how their
shared values of respect, empathy, and inclusivity have greatly impacted and shaped the culture
in our community. The insight, experiences, and perspective I offer will contribute meaningfully
to the work of the board and the city. My academic background in psychology, combined with my
current training as a nursing student, has enhanced my skills in critical thinking, research, and
decision-making, all of which are essential qualities for this leadership opportunity. My roles in
student organizations, including Students for Justice in Palestine and the US Palestinian
Community Network, have not only allowed me to become an active member in various spaces
and communities, but it has also prepared me to excel in a position like this one. Further, these
experiences have allowed me to engage in important conversations around equity and policy-
related issues that will provide me the ability to thoughtfully and effectively represent the
perspectives of a diverse community. My commitment and passion for sustainable change have
encouraged me to pursue this role, and my strong work ethic, cultural awareness, and
commitment to serving my community thoughtfully and responsibly will strengthen my success in
this position.

I have been a color guard instructor at River City Rhythm, a non-profit youth organization, for
the past 8 years. I also perform administrative support for grant writing and educational

N/A I want to help Columbia Heights residents have a prosperous and welcoming neighborhood. There are so many
small changes that can be made in our community that leads to larger positive impacts and I would like to be
apart of making that happen.
I believe I am very qualified to serve due to my commitment to youth development, and my attention to detail
that has served me well in my current position in regulatory affairs, and grant writing.
I have live in many neighborhood throughout my life and seen what a difference a committed
council and committee can make to the overall feel of a community.
Working as a colorguard instructor, I have developed skills in group communication that has
served me well in my professional activities. This role has exposed me to student of various

My professional background at the University of Minnesota has prepared me to support the multifaceted
challenges often faced by local government commissions. Currently as a Division Manager, I oversee
operations for 13 academic surgeons and manage an annual operating budget of $1.6M. This role requires a
high degree of transparency, accountability, and the ability to align diverse stakeholders—skills I believe are
beneficial in civic leadership. Throughout my career, I have specialized in turning high-level goals into scalable
action plans. Some key highlights of my experience that align with board service include:
- Financial Stewardship: I have extensive experience mediating financial discrepancies and administering long-
term financial strategies to ensure every dollar is utilized effectively.
- Community Outreach & Inclusion: Through the Global Surgery and Disparities Program, I have fostered
internal and external partnerships to build brand recognition within the global health and LGBTQ+
communities. I also manage local outreach events to raise awareness for critical health issues.
- Operational Excellence: I have a history of improving efficiency, such as increasing clinical productivity by
4,000% through improved access and better routing procedures.
Though I am newer to the city (moved here 2.5 years ago), I am excited about the future of
Columbia Heights and am particularly interested in how we can utilize our city’s resources to
foster a more inclusive and sustainable environment for all residents. I am encouraged by the
roadway improvements planned for Central Avenue, the improvements planned for Huset Park,
and the development project for the vacant lot off 43rd/Central.
I have always enjoyed volunteering and am seeking opportunities to become move involved with
my local community. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my background in strategic
operations and community engagement can support the mission of your boards and
commissions.

Serving on a board or commission for my city represents both a meaningful responsibility and a natural
extension of my commitment to community engagement. I believe that strong, vibrant communities are built
by residents who are willing to contribute their time, knowledge, and perspective to help guide thoughtful
decision-making. By serving in this capacity, I would have the opportunity to play an active role in shaping the
future of the city I care about.
In addition, I would bring valuable knowledge and experience to the role. I understand the importance of
thoughtful analysis, collaboration, and clear communication when addressing complex issues. I am prepared to
review materials carefully, ask constructive questions, and work respectfully with fellow board or commission
members, staff, and community stakeholders. Sharing my skills and insights in service of the public good is
something I take seriously.
Ultimately, my desire to serve is rooted in a belief that local government works best when residents actively
participate. I am committed to approaching this role with integrity, open-mindedness, and a collaborative
spirit. By serving on a board or commission, I hope to contribute positively to our city’s continued growth and
to help ensure it remains a place where all residents can thrive.
What makes me qualified to be on a board or commission. I have a docorate of nursing specializing in mental
health. I also strongly believe in diversity and community.
I am well qualified to serve on a board or commission because I bring both advanced professional expertise
and a deep commitment to community values. Earning a Doctorate of Nursing Practice with a specialization in
mental health has equipped me with strong analytical skills, evidence-based decision-making abilities, and a
comprehensive understanding of how policies and systems affect individuals and families. My background in
mental health, in particular, provides valuable insight into issues such as access to care, crisis response,
prevention, equity, and the social factors that influence community well-being.
Serving on a board or commission for my city represents both a meaningful responsibility and a
natural extension of my commitment to community engagement. I believe that strong, vibrant
communities are built by residents who are willing to contribute their time, knowledge, and
perspective to help guide thoughtful decision-making. By serving in this capacity, I would have
the opportunity to play an active role in shaping the future of the city I care about.
Community engagement has always been important to me. Whether through volunteering,
attending local events, supporting neighborhood initiatives, or participating in public discussions,
I value staying informed and involved. Serving on a board or commission would allow me to
deepen that engagement by contributing in a structured and impactful way. It would give me the
chance to listen to fellow residents, understand diverse viewpoints, and help ensure that
decisions reflect the needs and aspirations of the broader community.
I am also motivated by a strong desire to give back. Our city provides essential services,
infrastructure, and opportunities that benefit us all. Serving on a board or commission is a way to
express gratitude for those benefits by helping steward resources responsibly and transparently.
It is an opportunity to support policies and initiatives that promote sustainability, equity, and long
term growth.

I would like to serve another term on the Sustainability Commission to continue building on the important
work of our inaugural term. Since August 2023, our Commission has worked on policies, events and community
engagement activities to make environmental sustainability feel more accessible and attainable for our
neighbors -- Complete Streets, Partners in Energy Action Plan, Sustainable Purchasing Policy, quarterly
sustainability articles in the City newsletter and much more. I am qualified to continue this work with both my
experiences as Commission member, as well as the skills I bring to the table from my professional career --
project management, marketing/content development, technical/policy writing and data
analytics/interpretation.
I have lived in Columbia Heights for the past seven years, which has been all of my adult life since
completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota. I have felt deeply
connected to this City by getting to know my neighbors and working together to make this place
home -- through our gardening groups, Buy Nothing exchanges, HeightsNext events, and much
more. I am also extremely active in local mutual aid and community partnership efforts -- as a
fluent Spanish speaker, I help connect Spanish-speaking families with the resources they need to
feel safe and thrive in our community. This includes food mutual aid through Community Aid
Network MN (where I am on the organizing leads team), as well as grassroots efforts to provide
neighbors with transportation, employment, healthcare access, and more. Lastly, I believe that a
strong sense of neighborliness and community is critical for mitigating the effects of climate
change and enabling local sustainability action -- I spend much of my free time consuming
information/content about grassroots climate action in North America from podcasts, videos,
books, etc. and want to continue bringing that knowledge to the Sustainability Commission to
make our city a safe and healthy place to live for generations to come.

I am interested in serving on the Sustainability Commission because I want to be involved in the community
that I'm living in, and to help positively shape the present and future atmosphere and direction of the
city/community. The Sustainability Commission intersects formal government processes with community
volunteer work and citizen perspectives, where each informs, shapes, and assists the other, and that is a
relationship I'd like to continue contributing to. I believe I'm qualified to serve on the Sustainability
Commission because I have had the privilege to serve on the Commission since 2023, and my background in
environmental science and engineering can provide a perspective that is useful to the type of work the
Sustainability Commission does.
My educational and professional background in environmental science and engineering would
bring a technical and analytical perspective that I believe would be useful to some of the work the
Sustainability Commission does. Additionally, my education included looking at environmental
and sustainability problems beyond the science and from a wholistic, interdisciplinary perspective
(policy, economics, cultural competency, etc.), which I believe is crucial to creating successful
sustainability programs and policies.
I have also lived in Columbia Heights almost my entire life (with the exception of my semesters at
university); this life experience has kept me integrated and deeply invested in the community,
and I would bring that care to my serving on the Commission. Having been a part of this
community has also allowed me to observe how the community has changed over the years and
the direction it seems to be going, and I feel having that understanding and perspective would be
useful in helping the Commission strategize for short term and long term successes.
I have also had the privilege of serving on the Sustainability Commission since 2023, and would
love to provide a seasoned perspective to the Commission for another term that would support
all the new ideas and perspectives coming in with new term.

After 11 years in Columbia Heights, I finally feel I have the time space to serve my community in a civic
volunteer capacity.
I believe I am qualified to serve on the Planning Commission because of my 16 years experiencce in the real
estate industry. I own several properties in Columbia Heights as well as renovated depressed properties in the
city and am well acquainted with building codes and permits. I also understand variances and the need for well
defined but flexible city ordiances. I have worked with a developer (United Properties) on a large-scale project
that took months of meeting with residents, the planning commission and city council (of Bloomington, MN) so
I am familiar with the approval process.
I have lived and worked in several states and countries over the years with my family. I have a
broad perspective of the world and attempt to be a student of the culture wherever I am. I am

A basic question is how the built environment affects the people who experience it everyday.
There is considerable evidence that living in an troubled/declining environment has a definite
negative effect on the inhabitants, hence the desire to improve the experience through successful
planning.

None. The driving factor behind my decision to apply to be on a city commission is to have an opportunity step up for
my community and apply my skills and knowledge towards decisions that can be impactful towards the city
and its residents. I have not actively sat on a board or commission before, but I have significant exposure to the
workings of both a volunteer commission and appointed board of managers through my career. I am proficient
in how meetings are performed, making motions, taking minutes, reading and understanding statues and
bylaws, agendas and packets for meetings, and analyzing construction plans and comprehensive management
plans. Through my experience of being a staff liaison for meetings, I understand the importance of coming to a
meeting prepared for discussion, reading the packet ahead of time, and asking questions as necessary during
the meeting.
I have working knowledge on the function of commissions and Board meetings as my current
professional role works closely with a Board of Managers and Citizen Advisory Committee for my
organization and also requires attending certain city Boards and commissions as needed for
projects. My undergraduate degree specialized in natural resources management which I get to
exercise in my professional life, however, I am looking to find an outlet where I can apply my
knowledge and skills from my sustainability management minor. I have also lived in various
places long-term (Oregon, Minnesota) and short-term (Stockholm Sweden, Cains Australia)
throughout my life that have given me valuable insight towards other communities'
environmental/sustainability management strategies. One particular quality about myself is that I
am an idea machine. I love brainstorming and discussing options and outcomes with others. As a

Secretary, and Chief Steward. I also helped to merge two locals which required writing new by-laws and
constitution. This has given me an interest in the operation of these kinds of boards.
My father also served and since he served I was always interested in the board.

As a citizen of Columbia Heights, I have always enjoyed our lovely parks. I have over the years taken exercise
classes and other community education classss. I have enjoyed being part of the community. I enjoy cheering
our youngsters at various games, plays and concerts. My children are grown and I now have 4 young
grandchildren. I would like to serve so I help cheer and support the youth of our community.
As a lifelong Columbia Heights library card holder, I would like to serve there to help with their programming
and share my love of reading to both English and Non-English readers.
I have a deep love for the history of our city. I also have much pride and hope for the future of our
city. My family is diverse as my lovely daughter-in-law is Somali as so are 2 of my grandchildren.
She loves parks almost as much as I do I have enjoyed sharing my love for community parks with
my grandchildren. We love taking walks and playing at the playgrounds. I would like to explore
the opportunity to form a walking program for our community. How wonderful it would be to
have all people of different walks, walking together for one goal? I think that would be exciting!

N/A I have been using libraries since I was a young child. It gave me a place to go on hot summer days or a cold
winter. There were so many books for me to choose from for reading (I was a bit advanced for reading), as well
as listening to albums while at the library. I also took creative classes for sewing, crafting, etc. I know what is
important to me and love helping people.
Parks and Recreation allows me to help keep things clean, fixed as needed, and connect with the community
which we need now more than ever.
I grew up with a sister who was four years older than me and was born with Down Syndrome, at a
time when people didn't bring their DS children home. My parents did. She was the core of our
family. I learned so much from her, more than I could teach her. I took care of her after my
parents divorced and my mom worked. This could be through the week. I didn't have a true social
group, but I did have a comfortable house and a sister who mostly would watch the same shows
and let me know (through sign language) if she wanted my attention or a drink or food. Because
of my sister, I listen more and am more comfortable talking with people with disabilities, as well
as students, parents, peers, etc. I believe people deserve hy

English only VITA tax return reviewer for 2016 and 2017 filing seasons CPA - Inactive MN#24418 I would like to serve on the Park & Recreation Commission. I am interested in this commission because I am
the mother to an 8 year old child and we make good use of the facilities available in the city. I would like to
become more involved in the city and offer my participation to ensure we have great opportunities for
recreation for years to come. Parks and recreation opportunities offer space to spend time together as a
community. I don't have prior experience working on a commission, but I am a fast learner and I have
management experience to offer. I believe in inclusive practices and a variety of opportunities for all ages and
backgrounds. My values are aligned with the mission statement of the commission. I love being a resident of
Columbia Heights and I believe our parks are a great way to show off our community values.
I have spent the last 20 years as a tax advisor, 5 years in public accounting and the last 15 years in
progressive roles at Mortenson. My main practice areas are corporate income, sales & use, and
property taxes. I will bring strong financial acumen to this role. I coordinate between many
internal departments in my role to ensure compliance with tax laws. I have people, process, and
project leadership experience. I have experience with identifying issues, addressing barriers, and
gathering feedback to solve problems.
I was raised in a low income family in Moorhead, MN. I understand that city offered opportunities
for children may be the only affordable recreation opportunities for some families. I lost my
mother 3 years ago, she spent the last 10 years of her life in an assisted living facility. I believe the
opportunities afforded her via community activities played a role in extending her life and
enhancing the quality. Ensuring residents are given the chance to spend time together and have
activities to look forward to is deeply important to me. Parks and recreation are at the heart of
any community. I also love fun and planning future fun, so I will be bringing enthusiasm.

I feel I still have a lot to give to the commission. Community resiliency programs and infrastructure are needed
to ensure all members of our community can find refuge and resources when impacted by the effects of
climate change. I really want to see that through.
I am action oriented and love to find tasks and items to take action on while waiting for policy
and infrastructure changes. I bring perspective of a community member that has implemented
programs in an effort to educate fellow members to make decisions to help themselves as much
as the environment. There are financial and physical limitations to everyone but together we can
provide options to apply to every community member.

No I’ve been a resident of Columbia heights for sometime now and we like the community a lot. We enjoy the
diversity of the area in proximity to the city. I think with good vision for future planning the city can continue to
grow to be a strong asset to the community with planning and development goals to support positive
Residential and economic growth through small and medium sized businesses, quality housing and community
resources, which will create more demand for housing and services that can be sustained largely by the
community of residents and be an asset to not only the Columbia heights community, but surrounding
communities as well without needing to bring in large corporate businesses.
I have a strong entrepreneurial background, and have a true drive to be a part of quality
improvements, not only through housing, but would love to be supportive in community
development. I feel like Columbia heights, as a first tier suburb, has a lot of potential for strong
growth. The support the city has seen through the current administration has made significant
changes and I think that if those same commitments are made through continued positive growth
in other areas of the community the city will continue to develop to be a very desirable place to
live not only due to its proximity to Minneapolis and surrounding communities, but partially due
to the expansive corridor we have that can continue to attract quality businesses, and economic
growth through the city while being able to offer excellent neighborhoods and services to
residents.

I’m interested in increasing my civic service and engagement. As an MLIS candidate and library employee, I
believe I would bring practical experience to the board as well as a passion to move the Columbia Heights
Library forward.
Previous to my new library career, I spent around 10 years in advertising and marketing. The
project management, critical thinking, and strategic planning skills I gained would serve me well
on the Library Board.

No I am an active member of Twin Cities Diversity in Practice (2017-Present) and currently serve
as Co-Chair of the AI Task Force for the National Association for Law Placement (2025–26).
Previously, I served on NALP’s Lateral Recruiting Subcommittee (2020–21) and as Vice
President of the Minnesota Legal Career Professionals (2019–20). I have a background in
community-building through the arts, having taught improv at HUGE Theater from 2018–2020
and currently teaching improv at Strike Theater in Northeast Minneapolis on a contract basis.
I also do some contract communications work for Strike and helped them with their latest
Give to the Max Day fundraiser, which raised over $25K. Earlier in my career, while working in
nonprofit legal aid, I was a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. More
recently, I organized a neighborhood food drive for SACA in November 2025 and have
submitted a volunteer application to become more involved with the organization. I am also
an active member of Moms Demand Action.
In 2015, while serving as Program
Manager at Call for Justice, a
nonprofit dedicated to connecting
social service organizations with law
firm resources, our organization
received the American Bar
Association’s Louis M. Brown Award
for Legal Access. After that role, I
worked as a fundraising coordinator
& grant writer for Southern
Minnesota Regional Legal Services.
Since 2017, I have worked in law firm
environments in downtown
Minneapolis, gaining extensive
experience in legal operations,
professional collaboration, and
organizational systems. In 2024, my
husband nominated me for a
Columbia Heights Recycling
Champion award - and I got a
certificate, which was pretty cool (it's
on our fridge!)!
I have lived in Columbia Heights for five years and have developed a deep appreciation for the community and
the people who make it such a welcoming place to live. While my professional career has shifted towards a
focus on law firm recruiting, my true passion has always been service and helping others. I am excited about
the opportunity to serve on a city board or commission because it allows me to contribute meaningfully at the
local level, learn more about how the City operates, and support decisions that positively impact residents. I
feel qualified to serve based on my professional experience collaborating across teams, facilitating productive
discussions, and balancing competing priorities. I value thoughtful decision-making, inclusive dialogue, and
showing up consistently to do the work required. At this stage of my life (I'll be 35 this June!), I am eager to
dedicate my time, skills, and energy to serving my city. I've been told I come off as very serious and
professional, which I feel is important to make sure that I'm representing where I work and what I do in the
best light. That said, I'd also like to assure the reader that I'm a very fun and kind person, too!
I bring a combination of nonprofit, legal, and community-based experience that allows me to
understand issues from multiple perspectives. I grew up in Champlin, Minnesota, attended
college in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and returned to the Twin Cities after graduation, where I
lived in Minneapolis for seven years before moving to Columbia Heights. Beginning my career in
legal aid nonprofits provided me with a strong understanding of working with diverse
populations, navigating complex systems, and maximizing limited resources. My transition to law
firms gave me insight into how the business community operates and strengthened my ability to
communicate clearly, efficiently, and professionally with attorneys and other stakeholders. On a
personal level, I have lived on 37th Avenue and Buchanan Street for five years and have made a
deliberate effort to foster community among my neighbors. After living two blocks from Lake
Street during the George Floyd uprising, I learned a lot in a short amount of time about what it
means to show up for your community - especially when it requires bravery in the face of
uncertainty. Since moving to Columbia Heights, my husband and I had a baby, and have been
increasingly weaving ourselves into this city and its people. Having a toddler, we also have a
newfound appreciation for how close we live to the Columbia Heights Library! My neighbor
recently told me that I have a unique, natural ability to connect people and create welcoming
environments, feedback that has encouraged me to seek opportunities for broader civic
engagement. I would love the chance to bring my relationship-building mindset, along with my
professional experience, to service on a City board or commission.
