SUBJECT: August 2020 Operational Report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. The broken exterior window on the north side of the building remained unrepaired.
B. The flag pole was repaired to enable raising and lowering of the flag.
II. TECHNOLOGY
A. Columbia Heights Information Services and Library staff have begun preparing setup
instructions for the pc management software implementation. The project formally began
on August 26 with an estimated completion date of late October or early November.
B. Discussions about transferring library staff from virtual desktops and to regular computers
were started. Public computers will remain on the virtual desktop platform.
III. COLLECTION
A. Adult print materials were selected from the February, March and April issues of Booklist,
and the March and April issues of Kirkus Reviews and Library Journal. Bestsellers with
September publication dates and Spanish-language fiction were ordered. Juvenile print
materials were selected from the March and April issues of Booklist. Juvenile music on
CD was ordered. Adult DVDs were ordered.
B. Weeding was completed in adult mysteries G-L and adult nonfiction 300-400. Weeding of
easy nonfiction was completed.
IV. PROGRAMS AND VIRTUAL EVENTS
A. The Library Board met in a hybrid Zoom/in-person meeting on August 5.
B. Youth Fine Read Down was extended through August 15. $66.90 of fines were waived for
10 individuals.
C. The Summer Reading Program ended on August 15. Participations was 15 youth in the
birth through kindergarten age group; 20 participants who will be entering grades one
through six, and one teenager. Eighteen prize books were claimed.
D. A Virtual Lego Challenge was premiered on August 12.
E. Distribution of free summer lunches ended on August 10.
F. The ESL conversation circle met virtually on five Monday evenings.
G. Four contactless deliveries of materials were made to At-Home patrons.
V. STAFF
A. Youth Services Librarian Bri Belanger completed training on addressing race and
inclusion in storytime.
B. Adult Services Librarian Cortni O’Brien met with the City’s Centennial Celebration
Planning Committee and the MELSA Adult Programming Group.
C. Alex Adrian and Katherine Estall began training as new Library Supervisors on August
31.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation did not meet this month.
VII. MISC
A. I met with the city manager and department heads on August 3, 10, and 24.
B. I met with the Anoka County Library Management team on August 6 and 13.
C. I met with the Public Services team of the Anoka County Library on August 26.
D. I complete a memorandum of understanding with Columbia Heights Public Schools to
provide electronic library cards for students and teachers at Columbia Academy. Work is
currently underway to create the cards, essentially usernames and PINs, so that students
may access research databases, online homework help, and e-books and magazines.
