I. Adult Programs and Displays
a. The Sister Cities organization set up a Polish culture and history display in recognition of
National Polish-American Heritage Month (October).
b. Monthly book displays included legal reference, featured authors from the Club Book
author series, and spooky reads.
c. On Oct. 9, the Textile Center presented a Legacy-funded arts program: Needle Felted Fall
Foliage. Fourteen adults were in attendance.
d. On Oct. 12, the library partnered with the HeightsNEXT community group to bring a “Dia
de los Muertos/Day of the Dead” cultural celebration to the library. Total attendance
included 22 adults and youth. Attendees made a traditional ofrenda, painted sugar skulls,
and learned about the Mexican holiday traditions through a slide presentation.
e. The Adult Book Club met on Oct. 16 to discuss “The Baker’s Secret” by Stephen P.
Kiernan. Eleven adults attended.
f. Back by popular demand, local volunteer Janna Bereuter taught a workshop on Hardanger
embroidery, a Norwegian arts tradition. Six adults attended the workshop.
g. Eight “Buddy Up and Read” partners met a total of 19 times to practice their English
language reading and speaking skills. Two sets of partners is new this month.
h. Conversation Circles for adult English language learners met once a week, on Thursdays
from 1 to 2 p.m., facilitated by adult library volunteers. Total attendance for October was
34 adults.
i. Deliveries were made to At-Home Patrons.
II. Meetings
a. I attended the MNLINK training session at the Rum River library on Oct. 4.
b. I met with the Friends of the Library on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Tasty Pizza.
c. I met with Amada Simula from HeightsNEXT several times to plan the Dia de los
Muertos/Day of the Dead program, which took place Oct. 12.
d. I attended the Columbia Heights Seniors’ Wellness Expo on Oct. 14. The event resulted in
outreach to 14 community members, as well outreach to the other vendors.
e. I participated in a conference call with Kanopy digital streaming company with Renee on
Oct. 18
f. I met with Shannon from TeaSource in St Anthony Village to plan a special winter program
on Oct. 28.
g. I attended the Police Department’s Diversity Training on Oct. 30.
III. Projects
a. Copy for the winter edition of Heights Happenings was submitted and finalized.
b. Year-end orders were placed for the adult audiobook collection.
IV. Other
a. Eighteen adult volunteers donated 57 hours to the library, working with adult English
Language learners, delivering materials to At-Home Patrons, and performing miscellaneous
tasks at the library.
