Item: Windows 10 Updates for Tech Logic Automated Materials Handling System and Bibliotheca Self
Check Kiosks
Background: After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for
PCs running Windows 7. Both the Tech Logic materials handling system (automated book return) and
the three Bibliotheca self-check kiosks are built upon the Windows 7 operating system and will need to
be updated.
Director of Information Services Aleksandr Chernin notes that “…the prices are exorbitant but we may
not have other options if Bibliotheca won’t support Windows 7-based products at all. Given all Windows
10 issues that occur during and after upgrade even on standard computers, I think we should not try to
upgrade those specialized computers ourselves.”
Tech Logic
Tech Logic has decided against using commodity PCs on its AMH equipment for the implementation of
Windows 10 as the quality of the hardware components currently available no longer meets our
performance criteria. In continuing the spirit of Tech Logic’s dedication to customer service and quality
we now offer an operating system that will provide the library a stable long-term solution OS that does
not impact the performance of the PC. Thus the decision to move forward with Win 10 2019 LTSC. This
was chosen as it has guaranteed support until 2029 with only security updates installed making this
AMH configuration the strongest, most reliable setup Tech Logic has ever provided.
