I. Adult Programs and Displays
a. In recognition of National Library Week (April 7-13), patrons completed post-it notes,
answering the question: “Why did you come to the library today?” Statements were
featured on a display board throughout the week. Answers included: “job search,” “4H
in the community room,” “to do homework and play,” “to get my weekly supply of
books,” and “to look at quilting magazines.”
b. Mayor Schmitt read the National Library Week proclamation at the April 8 city council
meeting. Library board members Catherine Vesley and Pat Sowada presented the
proclamation. This was the first time the proclamation was read at the library, due to a
change in venue for the city council meetings this spring.
c. Book displays throughout April included a “Creativebug” library database display,
poetry books for National Poetry month, and genealogy resources leading up the
Genealogy 101 program on April 24. The glass display case also featured genealogy
related items.
d. Four adults attended Senior Surf, an introductory computer class for adults age 55+, on
April 3, instructed by a certified trainer from the Minnesota Board on Aging and
Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging.
e. Fifty-three adults attended “Memories of Columbia Heights,” a local history program
with longtime resident Rita Norberg. One attendee said the presentation was
“Passionate, informative, and touching.” The talk was recorded for library circulation.
f. Despite a spring blizzard, nine adults attended “Drawing to Watercolor,” a Legacy
funded program presented by Artistry MN. One attendee said: “I will finally use the
watercolor paint palettes at home that’ve never been touched.”
g. Jesse Davies from the City’s public works department presented a “Composting 101”
program to 5 adults on April 22.
h. Seventeen members of the COH Library Book Club met Wednesday, April 17, to
discuss “The Art Forger,” by BA Shapiro.
i. Sixteen adults attended the “Intro to Genealogy” program on April 24, presented by
NorthStar Genealogy. One attendee said “This topical class was just what I needed to
motivate my family’s genealogy. Great teacher with easy to understand methods.
Thank you!”
j. Five local senior citizens, along with Cortni and Delynn from the recreation
department, visited the University of Minnesota’s Kerlan Children’s Book Collection
for a tour and seminar on April 24.
k. Conversation Circles for adult English language learners met each Monday and
Thursday, facilitated by three library volunteers. A total of 26 people participated in
April.
l. Six “Buddy Up and Read” partners met at the library a total of 17 times to practice their
English language reading and speaking skills.
II. Meetings, etc.
a. Cortni met with the Friends of the Library on April 10 at Tasty Pizza.
b. Cortni attended the MELSA adult programming committee meeting on April 17.
III. Projects
a. Books, audiobooks, and DVDs were delivered to at-home patrons.
b. Copy was finalized for the Heights Newsletter.
c. Orders were placed for DVDs, office supplies, and summer reading materials.
IV. Other
a. Fourteen adult volunteers donated 49.5 hours to the library: working with adult English
Language learners, presenting a local history program, delivering materials to At-Home
Patrons, creating displays, and performing miscellaneous tasks at the library.
