SUBJECT: February 2019 Operational Report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. The snowmelt system was fixed and working as designed. A flame sensor in one of the
units was replaced.
B. SetPoint staff did a quarterly review of HVAC system performance, addressing an air
handler which remains open despite low outside temperatures and two VAV boxes which
are not holding appropriate temperature as directed by perimeter thermostats.
C. The hot water heater in the staff breakroom was replaced. A switch on one of the boilers
was replaced.
II. TECHNOLOGY
A. The LED monument sign was out on Feb 5. Software was reset and the sign restarted.
III. COLLECTION
A. Adult print materials were selected from the December 1, 2018, issues of Booklist, Kirkus
Reviews and Library Journal. Adult popular fiction with February and March publication
dates was ordered. Juvenile materials were selected from the September 2018 issues of
School Library Journal, Booklist, BookLinks, and Growing Minds, and the October issue
of School Library Journal. Orders for juvenile award winners and graphic novels were
placed. DVDs and music CDs were ordered.
B. Weeding in adult fiction H-L was completed.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. The Winter Reads adult reading program continued throughout the month.
B. An adult Read Down was offered; 17 adults “read down” $76.20 of fines.
C. Senior Surf Computer class was held on February 6.
D. The Library Board meeting was cancelled.
E. The Adult Services Librarian and the Senior Coordinator led a valentine-making program
for older adults on February 6.
F. READ Dogs was held on February 6.
G. A sixth grade class from the TESFA International School visited on February 7.
H. The Friends of the Library met on February 13
I. A LEGO Challenge program for kids was held on February 13.
J. A Coiled Jewelry class for adults was taught by the Textile Center on February 13.
K. The Graphic Novel book club was held at Columbia Academy on February 19.
L. The adult Book Club discussed Elizabeth Strout’s “Olive Kitteridge” on February 20.
M. Finding Loren: a WWII history program, was offered on February 27.
N. Five sessions of Family Storytime were offered on Monday mornings and evenings.
O. Six sessions of Baby Read, Baby Grow were held on Thursday mornings.
P. Three sessions of 4-H Tech Wizards, in partnership with University of Minnesota
Extension staff, were offered.
Q. Four classes from the Immaculate Conception School visited.
R. Six classes from the Early Childhood and Family Education program visited.
S. “Buddy Up and Read” volunteers met with adults learning English.
T. English Conversation Circles for adult learners were offered on four Thursday afternoons
and three Monday evenings.
U. Deliveries of materials to At-Home patrons were made.
V. 13 adult volunteers donated 38.5 hours of service.
V. STAFF
A. Adult Services Librarian Cortni O’Brien served as staff liaison to the Friends of the
Library
B. Library Clerk Winnie Coyne and I met for her annual performance review.
C. Library Page Jimmy Heryla accepted another job so has been removed from the regular
schedule. He will continue to work every other Saturday. The position has been posted;
applications will be accepted through March 15.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. Three members of the Foundation met with attorney Bradley Kletscher about laws
governing public charities and to determine best practices for disbursing funds.
VII. MISC
A. I met with the city manager and department heads on February 25
B. I met with the Anoka County Library management team on February 14 and 21.
C. I met with the Anoka County Library Public Service team on February 27.
D. I met with members of the Police Department to discuss strategies for offering summer
meals for youth.
E. I provided a library tour for the new City building inspector.
F. I participated in a discussion with Jane Eastwood, former director of the St. Paul Public
Library, and Anoka County Libraries management team staff about improving racial
equity in library programs and services.
G. I spoke with StarTribune reporter Erin Adler for an article about city libraries.
H. I attended on orientation about the Census at a MetroNet event on February 21.
I. I prepared a PowerPoint presentation and participated in a planning meeting for the City
Services Expo to be held on March 2.
J. I met with Gretchen Freeman and David DeGrandchamp from TechLogic (manufacturer
of the automated materials system) on February 28.
K. I attended a retirement party for Public Works staffer Lauren McClanahan.
