I. Adult Programs and Displays
a. Sister Cities set up displays of Polish culture and history in recognition of National Polish-
American Heritage Month (October). Staff set up an accompanying display of library
books related to Poland.
b. Monthly book displays included “books made into movies,” “PBS Great American Reads,”
and “Minnesota Fiction.”
c. On Oct. 13, the Anoka County Historical Society presented a special program
commemorating the library’s 90th anniversary year. “The History of Columbia Heights”
was presented to a full house in the community room, and many memories were shared by
participants. Total attendance was 81 adults.
d. Cathi Weber of NorthStar Genealogy conducted “Tips for Using Ancestry.com,” a Legacy-
funded program, on Oct. 15. Twelve adults attended.
e. Adult book club met on Oct. 17 to discuss “Main Street” by Sinclair Lewis. Seventeen
adults attended.
f. Eleven adults attended a "Healthy Life, Healthy You" nutrition class on Oct. 29, presented
by University of Minnesota Extension educator Lisa Wong. One attendee said “Lisa was
so approachable and knowledgeable. So good to be with others, chopping and cooking
together!”
g. Eight “Buddy Up and Read” partners met a total of 20 times to practice their English
language reading and speaking skills. One set of partners is new this month.
h. Conversation Circles for adult English language learners met once a week, on Thursdays
from 1 to 2 p.m., facilitated by adult library volunteers. Total attendance for October was
13 adults.
i. Scrabble Club, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, met on October 2 and 16. Total
attendance was 14 adults.
j. Deliveries were made to At-Home Patrons.
k. Winter program planning was finalized
II. Meetings
a. Cortni met with Dave Rudolph from SACA to discuss partnership opportunities and tour
the SACA facility on Oct. 1.
b. Cortni met with the Friends of the Library on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Sarna’s.
c. Cortni, Bri and Renee attended the Minnesota Library Association’s Annual Conference in
St. Cloud on Oct. 12. Breakout session highlights included “Visual Merchandising at Your
Library” and a presentation by the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library.
d. Cortni attended the Anoka County Libraries’ Arts, Reading, Culture and History (ARCH)
committee meeting on Oct. 15.
III. Projects
a. Copy for the winter edition of Heights Happenings was submitted and finalized.
b. A Columbia Heights Library “memories project” was kicked off at the ACHS presentation
on Oct. 13. Library memories will be on display at the open house celebration in
December.
c. Year-end orders were placed for the adult music collection.
IV. Other
a. Fourteen adult volunteers donated 55 hours to the library, working with adult English
Language learners, delivering materials to At-Home Patrons, and performing miscellaneous
tasks at the library.
