May Programs and Displays a. Book displays throughout May have included a meditation and wellness display, a Minnesota Book Awards display, a World War II nonfiction display, and a “Great American Read” display in conjunction with the PBS special. The glass display case featured a 90th anniversary memorabilia collection and LEGO club creations. b. Scrabble Club, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, met twice, on May 1 and May 15, with a total of 18 attendees. c. One attendee received individual instruction at Senior Surf, an introductory computer class for adults age 55+ on April 2. Senior Surf is led by a certified trainer from the Minnesota Board on Aging and Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging. d. On May 8, 39 adults attended an Author Talk with John Radzilowski, author of “Frantic 7: the American effort to aid the Warsaw uprising.” The library event was co- sponsored by the Columbia Heights Sister Cities International organization. e. Seventeen members of the COH Library Book Club met Wednesday, May 16, to discuss “Out Stealing Horses” by Per Petterson. f. Conversation Circles for adult English language learners met each Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m., facilitated by two adult library volunteers. Thirteen adults attended throughout the month of May. g. Seven “Buddy Up and Read” partners met at the library a total of 26 times to practice their English language reading and speaking skills. II. Meetings, Outreach etc. a. All staff attended the Anoka County Libraries’ Staff Day on May 3. Sessions included creating welcoming environments, the history of Anoka County Libraries, and project management. b. Cortni met with the Friends of the Library on May 9. c. Cortni met with Cheryl Lucius, Activities Director at Crestview, and three residents of Crestview to promote the library’s At-Home-Delivery service on May 16. d. On May 5, Cortni met with local bird expert Amanda Burnette to plan fall programming. e. Cortni attended the Minnesota Literacy Council’s free training on conducting “Conversation Circles” on May 17. f. Cortni attend the Arts, Reading, Culture and History (ARCH) committee meeting at Anoka County Libraries on May 21. g. Renee met with 14 adult ESL students from the Adult Basic Education center for a library overview and tour on May 23. h. Cortni met with Lisa Wong from SNAP-Ed on May 30 to discuss a possible partnership. III. Projects a. Books, movies, and sheet music were delivered to 7 at-home patrons. b. Donated materials was sorted. Items were added to the collection or sold in the library’s ongoing book sale. c. Orders were placed for adult audio books, youth and adult DVDs, and summer reading supplies. IV. Other a. Eleven adult volunteers donated 50 hours to the library: working with adult English Language learners, planning the 90th anniversary celebration, delivering materials to At-Home Patrons, working as computer tutors, creating displays, and performing miscellaneous tasks at the library. b. Four new patrons were added to the library’s At-Home-Delivery service.
