SUBJECT: July 2017 Operational Report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. The south Central Avenue door was adjusted so that it now unlocks consistently every
morning.
B. Facilities maintenance supervisor Eric Hansen has done an outstanding job of monitoring
building cooling and adjusting the system as needed.
C. Peoples Electric will return to fix ongoing issues with the sound system in the
Community room.
II. TECHNOLOGY
A. Public computing was down on July 5 and 6. Staff were unable to access any software,
with the exception of the Sirsi-Dynix integrated library system, on the city network on
July 5.
III. COLLECTION
A. Adult print books were selected from the January and February issues of Booklist and
Kirkus Reviews and the March 1st issue of Library Journal. Adult hardcover fiction with
August publication dates was pre-ordered. Youth selections were made from the January
15th issue of Kirkus Reviews and the March issue of School Library Journal.
B. Weeding of the adult fiction collection was completed. Weeding in E and J nonfiction
continued.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. A Senior Surf class for older adults was taught by a volunteer instructor from the Senior
LinkAge Line on July 5. Public computers were unavailable so the instructor used a laptop
to demonstrate rather having students learn with hands-on experience.
B. The Library Board met on July 5.
C. A Pokémon Party for teens was held on July 6.
D. Staff from Pollinate MN taught a class on bees for kids on July 11.
E. Storyteller Paulino Brenner captivated youth on July 12.
F. Teen Book Club discussed books made into movies on July 13.
G. The Teen Advisory Board met on July 17.
H. Yo-Yo Yoga was offered on July 18. The contracted instructor did not appear sp the
Youth Services Librarian pulled together a substitute program.
I. Scrabble Club for adults was held on July 18.
J. The Adult Book Club met on July 19 to discuss “The Lighthouse Road” by Peter Geye.
K. Snake Discovery Zoo staff presented a program on reptiles on July 19.
L. A Sumingashi Marbling program for teens was held on July 20.
M. Mad Science instructors presented a program on efflorescence for kids on July 25.
N. Anoka County Parks staff engaged in comprehensive planning sought community input
about parks on July 25. Posters and feedback forms continue to be on display in the library
for citizen response.
O. Two Storybook teas were held on July 26.
P. Teen Book Club met on July 27 to discuss first books in popular series.
Q. Local author J.P. Johnson read from his book at a publication event on July 29.
R. A parachute party for 2-5 year olds was held on July 31.
S. Library staff and teen volunteers served lunch to youth and families on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays, and Thursdays each week.
T. Anoka County Extension staff offered 4-H Tech Wizards programs on two Tuesdays.
U. Three sessions of Toddler Storytime were offered.
V. Three sessions of Family Storytime were held.
W. Bulk loans were prepared for ISD 13’s Adventure Club and Mini Adventure Club.
X. Volunteer reading “buddies” met with adults learning English throughout the month.
Y. Conversation Circles for adults learning to speak English were offered on Wednesdays
and Thursdays. Conversations Circles experienced a decline in attendance this month so
the Thursday session will be suspended until after Labor Day.
Z. Adult volunteers donated 25 hours to the library this month serving as reading buddies,
facilitating conversation circles, greeting program attendees, organizing magazines, and
hosting Scrabble Club.
V. STAFF
A. New Adult Services Librarian Cortni O’Brien began on July 10.
B. I met individually with Pages Tammie Powell, Farrah Briest, and Maria Fink for their 6-
month performance evaluations.
C. Youth Services Librarian Brianna Belanger met with the YES! Team (Youth Engagement
– School-Aged) of the Anoka County Library on July 21.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation did not meet this month. Bruce Magnuson is updating the Foundation’s
promotional brochure.
VII. MISC
A. I met with the City Manager and Finance Director on July 13 to present a proposed
department budget for 2018.
B. Cortni and I met with Amber Burnette and Mary Kne from Springbrook Nature Center on
July 20 about potential programming ideas related to birding and environmental education.
C. I met with Kathleen Moriarty, Program Supervisor of Metro North Adult Basic Education,
on July 21 to brainstorm ways that the library and Center can partner.
D. I met with City division heads and the City Manager on July 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31.
E. I met with the management team of the Anoka County Library on July 6, 13, and 20.
F. I participated in a third session of facilitation training from UMN Extension instructor Lisa
Hinz on July 26.
