Adult Programs and Displays a. Over 40 people attended the library’s inaugural art show opening reception on Nov. 3. “The Manhattan Project” features photography by Walter Horishnyk and Richard Ott. b. Artist Anna Metcalfe led a group of 10 Columbia Heights residents in a discussion of the Mississippi Watershed over tea on Nov. 8. The discussion will form the basis for the artist’s “Upstream: Mississippi” ceramics project, sponsored by the Minnesota State Arts Board. c. Six adults attended a National Novel Writing Month “Nanorimo” Write-In program in the community room on Nov. 4. d. Twelve people attended a question and answer presentation with “The Manhattan Project” artists on the evening of Nov. 13. e. November is National Homelessness Awareness Month. November’s display case was developed in collaboration with Anoka County, the Friends of the Library, and library staff. f. Rotating book displays included a “Nanorimo” display and a Melsa “Club Book” display. g. Seven “Buddy Up and Read” partners met a total of 22 times to practice their English language reading and speaking skills. h. Conversation Circles for adult English language learners met twice a week, on Wednesdays and Thursdays (except Thanksgiving) from 1 to 2 p.m., facilitated by three adult library volunteers. i. Scrabble Club, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, met on Nov. 7 and 21. Total attendance for the month was 16. j. Senior Surf for Adults 55+ was held on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Six adults attended the class, which offered hands-on computer learning with help from representatives of the Senior Linkage Line and the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging. k. The Library Book Club met on Wednesday, Nov. 15, to discuss "Hillbilly Elegy" by JD Vance. Sixteen adults participated. l. Deliveries were made to At-Home Patrons. m. Spring program planning was underway. II. Meetings/Outreach a. Cortni met with the Friends of the Library on Wednesday, Nov. 8. b. Cortni met with the ACL Adult Books and Reading Committee on Nov. 13. c. Cortni completed a 12-hour literacy tutor training with the Minnesota Literacy Council throughout Nov. 7-16. The training will inform volunteer management and training opportunities for COH library volunteers. III. Projects a. With assistance from the Friends of the Library, a collection box is place in the library for Project Bookshelf, an annual collection of new, donated books for children and teens, to be distributed through SACA before the end of the year. Donated books will be accepted through Tuesday, Dec. 12. b. Final orders were written for supplies, library cards, adult music, DVDs and audio books. IV. Other a. Sixteen adult volunteers donated57 hours to the library, working with adult English Language learners, greeting at library programs, delivering materials to At-Home Patrons, working as computer tutors, creating displays, and performing miscellaneous tasks at the library.
