I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. City staff painted a feature wall in the teen area and installed shelving in the janitor closet
and staff restroom for supplies. Ebert Construction and subcontractors continued to work
on completing construction punch list items including window caulking, adjustment of
entry doors, and programming of electronic security controls. Embury replaced damaged
shelving supports in the staff workroom. The sensor for the snowmelt system is finally
working after much adjustment.
II. TECHNOLOGY
A. IS staff rebuilt the computer connected to the microfilm viewer in the History Room. IS
staff continues to troubleshoot issues with thin clients and USB drives.
III. COLLECTION
A. Adult print books were selected from the June 15th issue of Library Journal and the July
issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, and Library Journal. Anticipated bestsellers with
January and February publication dates were ordered. Children’s selections were made
from the June and July issues of Booklist, the June 1st and July 15th issues of Kirkus
Reviews and the June issue of School Library Journal.
B. Non-circulating adult fiction (A-B) was weeded from the collection. Weeding of E fiction,
juvenile magazines, and juvenile mixed media continued.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. BookWarms winter reading program for children was offered this month.
B. Winter Reads, an adult winter reading program, was offered this month.
C. The Library Board meeting scheduled for 1/4 was cancelled due to lack of a quorum. A
special meeting was held on 1/18. The Board learned that it held title to two of the six
parcels underlying the old library at 820 40th Avenue and acted to transfer ownership of
those parcels to the City.
D. A Senior Surf class was offered on 1/4.
E. The Friends of the Library met on 1/11. They received a report of summer reading
program plans and agreed to assist the children’s librarian with a kick-off event.
F. Lego Club was held on 1/12.
G. Scrabble Club for adults was held on 1/3 and 1/17.
H. The adult Fiction Book Club met to discuss The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry on 1/18.
I. A Block Party for toddlers was held on 1/20.
J. North Star Genealogy staff taught a class, “Using Family Tree Maker and Ancestry.com,”
on 1/20.
K. The Teen Advisory Board met on Saturday, 1/21.
L. A Maker Club for elementary-aged kids was held on 1/25.
M. Historian John D. Cox taught a classon Civil War General Stonewall Jackson on 1/25.
N. A Guinness World Records program for K-5 kids was held on 1/27.
O. Anoka County Extension staff offered 4-H Tech Wizards on five Tuesdays afternoons.
P. Three Toddler Storytimes were held this month on Monday mornings.
Q. Five Family Storytimes were held this month on Tuesday mornings. Former Children’s
Librarian Joanne Scudder visited on 1/23 to share a story and memories with local families
and library staff.
R. Three Baby Read, Baby Grow programs were offered in partnership with ISD 13Early
Childhood and Family Education staff.
S. Bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School and Mini Adventure Club.
T. One Immaculate Conception School class visited the library.
U. 26 youth participated in Youth Read Down; reading for 48.25 hours and earning $128.88
in fine waivers.
V. Volunteer reading “buddies” met with adults learning English throughout the month.
W. Conversation Circles for adults learning to speak English were offered on Wednesdays
and Thursdays.
X. Deliveries of library materials were made to “At-Home” patrons.
Y. Adult volunteers donated 43.5 hours to the library this month.
V. STAFF
A. Pages Farrah Briest, Tammie Powell, Geraldine Yorks, and Maria Fink began working.
B. Geraldine Yorks resigned effective 1/19, citing the physical difficulty of shelving.
C. I met with Library Clerk Winnie Coyne for her 2-year performance evaluation on 1/24.
D. I met with Clerk Typist 2-Adult Services Nick Olberding for his 6-month performance
evaluation on 1/26.
E. Adult Services Librarian Barb Kondrick participated in Arts and Culture Team and
Programming for Older Adults Team meetings at the Anoka County Library.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation did not meet in January.
VII. MISC
A. I met with the management team of the Anoka County Library on 1/5, 1/12, and 1/19.
B. I met with the public services team of the Anoka County Library on 1/25.
C. Bri Belanger and I met with staff (curriculum specialists, media center staff, and
community education director) from independent school district 13 to discuss how the
library and school might collaborate to better serve students in the district. Current district
focus is on building literacy in grades 6-8. Potential cooperative programming may
include using both organizations’ websites to promote resources to students and families,
an all-community read, field trips for teens to the library, library events for families,
promotion of online test resources with teens, and displaying student art at the library.
D. I met with Kristen Stuenkel who extended an invitation to join the Rotary Club.
E. On 1/13 I received training in using the Evidence Manager software which operates the
video cameras in the library.
F. I attended the City Council meeting of 1/23 to learn of the appointment of new Board
member Tricia Conway.
G. An auto accident on 1/27 caused minor damage to the concrete planter on the exterior of
the community room.
