I. Adult Programs and Displays
a. Winter Reads, an adult reading program, that encourages folks, age 17 and up, to share a
short review of a book they have read or listened to, started in January and runs through the
end of February. Participants’ names are entered into a weekly prize drawing, and each
participant gets a free book light, while supplies last, provided by MELSA.
b. Senior Surf, an introductory computer class for seniors, age 55+, was held on Wednesday,
January 4, instructed by a certified trainer from the Minnesota Board on Aging and
Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging.
c. Seventeen adults attended a genealogy class on January 20, called “Using Family Tree
Maker and Ancestry.com,” offered in collaboration with North Star Genealogy and paid for
with money provided by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
d. Twenty adults and one teen attended a historical talk, on Wednesday, Jan. 25, by local
author and historian John D. Cox, about the brilliant and eccentric Civil War General
Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson of the Confederacy.
e. Conversation Circles for adult English language learners met twice a week, on Wednesdays
and Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m., facilitated by four different adult library volunteers.
f. Three “Buddy Up and Read” partners met a total of six times to practice their English
language reading and speaking skills.
g. Scrabble Club, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, met twice, on January 3 and 17.
h. The Library Book Club met on Wednesday, January 18, to discuss “The Storied Life of
A.J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin.
i. Deliveries were made to At-Home Patrons.
II. Meetings
a. Barb met with the Friends of the Library on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
b. Barb participated in the ACL Arts and Culture Team meeting on Jan. 17 and the ACL
Programming for Older Adults Team meeting on Jan. 25.
c. Spring program planning was completed and copy finalized for Heights Happenings.
III. Projects
a. DVDs and office and program supplies were ordered.
IV. Other
a. Eleven adult volunteers donated 43.5 hours to the library, working with adult English
Language learners, delivering materials to At-Home Patrons, working as computer tutors,
creating displays and performing miscellaneous tasks at the library.
