SUBJECT: November 2016 Operational Report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. Ebert Construction and subcontractors continue to work on completing punch list items.
Electricians have completed adjustments to the lighting controls in the Community and
History rooms and have replaced faulty overhead fixtures in the main library. Wall
protection panels were added in the staff workroom and book drop area. Heating systems
are functioning. Library staff continues to experience difficulty with automated door locks
and building security systems.
II. TECHNOLOGY
A. Information Services staff installed thin-clients at the “ask me” desk. Information Services
staff continues to improve the functioning of thin client equipment which will replace
standalone computers for many city staff in the coming months.
III. COLLECTION
A. Adult print books were selected from the May 1st issue of Kirkus Reviews, the May 15th
issues of Booklist, Kirkus, and Library Journal; and the June issue of Booklist. Adult
paperbacks and anticipated fiction bestsellers with December publication dates were
ordered. Children’s selections were made from the May 15th issue of Booklist and May 1st
issue of Kirkus. Easy readers were ordered.
B. Weeding was completed in adult nonfiction 939-999.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. A Senior Surf adult computer class was offered on 11/2.
B. The Library Board met on 11/2.
C. The Friends of the Library met on 11/9.
D. A Lego Club was held on 11/10.
E. Four “Write-Ins” were held to encourage writing during National Novel Writing Month.
F. Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D. Dogs!) and handlers worked with readers
on 11/14.
G. A Fandom Club for teens was held on 11/15.
H. Scrabble Club for adults was held on 11/15.
I. Four Head Start classes visited the library on 11/15 and 11/16.
J. The adult Fiction Book Club discussed Fredrik Backman’s “A Man Called Ove” on 11/16.
K. Two Immaculate Conception School classes visited the library on 11/16.
L. A Block Party for young children was held on 11/18.
M. The adult Non-Fiction Book was held on 11/18.
N. Cupcake Wars, a special Teen Advisory Board program, was held on 11/19.
O. MakerClub met on 11/30.
P. 4-H Tech Wizards met for five sessions on Tuesday afternoons.
Q. Two sessions of toddler storytime were held on Monday mornings.
R. Three sessions of preschool storytime were held on Tuesday mornings.
S. Three sessions of Baby Read, Baby Grow were held on Thursday mornings.
T. Volunteer reading “buddies” met with adults learning English throughout the month.
U. Conversation Circles for adults learning to speak English were offered on Wednesdays
and Thursdays.
V. The Library, with the assistance of the Friends, is collected new books for children as part
of Project Bookshelf. Donations will be distributed through SACA.
W. Adult volunteers donated 51 hours to the library this month.
V. STAFF
A. I interviewed seven finalists for Library Page positions. Job offers were extended to Farrah
Briest, Tammie Powell, Geraldine York, and Maria Fink who will begin training on
December 7.
B. An all-staff meeting to review procedures in the new facility was held on 11/10.
C. Clerk Typist II Kelly Olson and I met for her annual performance evaluation on 11/15.
D. Adult Services Librarian Barb Kondrick and I met for her annual performance evaluation
on 11/29.
E. Seven members of the part-time staff received mandatory safety training on 11/30.
F. Adult Services Librarian Barb Kondrick attended MELSA training for the new Chilton
automotive repair database.
G. Children’s Librarian Brianna Belanger visited ECFE classes at the Family Center on 11/2,
11/3, and 11/4. She also participated in Valley View Elementary’s English Language
Learners Family Night.
H. Bri received Science Technology Engineering and Math training provided by State Library
Services and the Minnesota Science Museum on 11/9.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation did not meet this month. They made a donation to the City to cover the
expenses related to the RFID implementation project.
VII. MISC
A. I met with the management team of the Anoka County Library on 11/3 and 11/16.
B. The Community Room served as a precinct polling location on Election Day, 11/8.
C. I presented the proposed 2017 library budget at a City Council work session on 11/7.
D. I participated in a Library Services and Technology Act grant focus group at State Library
Services on 11/ 14.
E. I met with Anoka County Library staff on 11/15 to discuss records retention procedures
for patrons with outstanding debt.
F. The library received a Minnesota Brownfields ReScape award for “innovation,
collaboration, and exemplary results in revitalizing formerly contaminated land.”
G. Library staff tracked reference questions 11/14-11/19 during the final MELSA survey
week of 2016.
H. A laptop was stolen from a library study room on 11/26. Library Supervisor Al Mamaril
confronted the suspect and the laptop was returned to its owner. The suspect fled before
police arrived.
