HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Renee Dougherty City of Columbia Heights | Library th 820 40 Ave NE Ph: 763-706-3690 -706-3691 www.columbiaheightsmn.gov CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: May 2016 Operational Report DATE: May 31, 2016 I.BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A.Final delivery of rented toweling was received. Facilities maintenance staff is in the th process of discontinuing service agreements for the 40 Avenue building. II.TECHNOLOGY A.Information Services staff continued to work on configuring publ and staff computers for the new building. We anticipate moving to a thin client/server environment for most computing in the new space. Stand-alone computers will be used in the history room with the microfilm reader/print and smart monitor and in the craft room with a smart monitor. B.RFID tagging of the collection shelved in the building was completed. Staff continues to tag borrowed items as they are returned. III.COLLECTION th A.Print books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the January 15 st issue of Kirkus Reviews and the January 1 issues of Booklist, Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews. Adult books with May publication dates, paperbacks, and replacement copies of worn titles were also ordered. from the November, December, and January issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews and School Library Journal. New manga and replacements of worn titles were ordered in anticipation of summer reading demand. B.Weeding of adult non-fiction was completed. Weeding of the adult reference collection was started. Print reference is receiving declining use and much of the curre collection is outdated. The new library will have a much smaller space available to house reference so many titles are being moved into the circulating collection. IV.PROGRAMS A.A Senior Surf class for older adults was offered 5/4. B.The Library Board met on 5/4. C.The Friends of the Library met on 5/11. D.Lego Club was held on 5/12. E.Two farewell ceremonies for families were held on 5/17. Many people visited to share their memories of the building, test their knowledge of library trivia, and to take photographs. F. The Friends hosted a Scrabble Club for adults on 5/17. G.The Adult Non-Fiction Book Club met on 5/18 to discuss Still Alice. H.The adult Non Fiction Book Club met on 5/20. I.Four classes from Immaculate Conception School visited. J.Bulk loans were prepared for Adventure Club and Mini-Adventure Club. K.Conversation Circles, facilitated by a native English speaker, were offered for language Page 2 learners throughout the month. L.Buddy Up and Read mentoring sessions for adults learning to read were offered. M.Materials were selected and delivered to At-Home patrons. N.Adult volunteers donated 44 hours of service this month. V.STAFF A.Kelli Bourgeois and I reviewed applications for the open Clerk-Typist II position and conducted interviews with eight candidates. A conditional offered was extended to the candidate whose skills best matched the required and desired qualifications for the position. At month-end it was not known whether the candidate had accepted the offer. B.Adult Services Librarian Barb Kondrick presented information abo senior buildings on 5/2 (Crestview Nursing Home), 5/11 (Parkview Villa), and 5/18 (Crestview Assisted Living). C.Childrevisited local schools to promote the summer reading program and to encourage kids to continue to practice re summer recess from classes. She visited Columbia Academy, Global Academy, Head Start, Immaculate Conception School, Highland Elementary, and North Par D. preliminary plans for moving the collection and transitioning to the new building. All staff, including part-time temporary employees, toured the new building later in the afternoon. VI.FOUNDATION A.The Foundation met on 5/11 and previewed mock-ups of the donor wall to be installed in the new library. VII.GRANTS VIII.MISC A.I attended the City Council work session on 5/2 for presentation of final change orders for the new library. B. Members of the Library Board, Foundation, and Library Design Tas new building on 5/4. C.I proctored a final examination for an online student at the University of Minnesota- Crookston on 5/6. D.The mobile RFID tagging station was returned to Bibliotheca on 5/23. E.Fifteen boxes of library discards and unusable donations were shipped to Books this month. F.I met with the Anoka County Library Management Team on 5/5 and 5/26. G.I met with the Anoka County Library Public Services Team on 5/25 H.I met with an ad hoc committee convened to examine the viability purchase the Overdrive e-book/audiobook platform and e-content. A decision will be made regarding Overdrive e-books by the end of August. I.I met with Kevin Hansen and HGA staff to plan the grand opening ceremoon 5/12 and 5/26. J.I began drafting the 2017 operating budget.
