BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. NSI/Horwitz inspected the HVAC system and changed filters and belts on 10/1. Technicians returned on 10/30 to lift the rooftop units to repair damage incurred during a summer hail storm. B. Fidelity Building Services buffed the hard flooring in the lower level on 10/30. C. The exterior windows were washed on 10/25. D. A key was broken off in the back door lock by a substitute custodian; the lock was disassembled and repaired on 10/12. E. New custodian Sarah Niznik began cleaning the library during the week of 10/19. F. Aid Electric replaced ballasts in fluorescent light fixtures in the adult reading room on 10/26. II. TECHNOLOGY A. I met with Doug Monson of Biblioteca (formerly 3M Library Solutions) staff about radio frequency identification technology, necessary staff hardware, and security gates at the entrance/exit new library. Information included a preliminary cost estimate. III. COLLECTION A.Print books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the June issues of Booklist, Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews. Adult hardcover fiction with November publication dates, patron requests, and new publications from Minnesota authors were ordered. from the April thst 15 and May 1 issues of Kirkus Reviews. B.Weeding of adult nonfiction 235-303.4 was completed. Weeding of adult music CDs was completed. Weekly reports of Columbia Heights were reviewed and items weeded based on condition and estimated future use. IV. PROGRAMS A. An Afterschool Family Game Night was hosted by the Teen Advisory Board on 10/5. B. Castles and Palaces of Poland, a program for adults, was held on 10/6 as part of Polish American History month. C. A Senior Surf computer class for older adults was offered on 10/7. D. The Friends of the Library met on 10/7. E. The Library Board met on 10/7. F. A LEGO Club for kids was held on 10/8. G. Author, filmmaker, and historian William Jamerson presented a program on the Civilian Conservation Corps on 10/13. H. An intermediate-level English as a Second Language class from Metro North Adult Basic Education received a tour and orientation to the library on 10/14. I. Schiffelly Puppets presented a dramatization of the fairy tale Rapunzel on 10/15. This library program was offered for elementary-aged children during the MEA recess. J. 10/16 during MEA break. K. The Adult Non-Fiction Book Club met on 10/15. L. M. A Family Art Day drop-in program was offered on 10/24. N. R.E.A.D. Dogs, a program which allows reluctant readers to practice reading aloud with a therapy dog, was offered on 10/26. O. Four sessions of Toddler Storytime were led by ECFE Parent Educator Chris Buzzetta or Bri Belanger. P. Four sessions of Preschool Storytime were offered by Kelly Olson or Bri Belanger. Q. Four sessions of Baby Read, Baby Grow were led by ECFE Parent Educator Chris Buzzetta. R. Four classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the library this month. S. Bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School and Adventure Club. T. Conversations Circles, facilitated by a native English speaker, were hosted for new language learners throughout the month. U. One-on-one mentoring for adults learning to read was offered through the Buddy Up and Read program. V. Materials were selected and delivered to At-Home patrons. W. Adult volunteers served the Library this month by delivering materials to at-home patrons, preparing materials for the sale cart, greeting program attendees, and facilitating book clubs. V. STAFF A. Adult Services Librarian Barb Kondrick and I attended the Minnesota Library Association Conference in St. Paul on 10/8 and 10/9. B. Clerk Typist Renee Rewitzer attended a meeting of lead circulation staff of the Anoka County Library on 10/13. C. Bri was introduced to the Council on 10/23. D. Clerk Typist Kelly Olson worked with ACL Library staff to learn new reporting for tracking cash received for fines, fees, and sales. E. Barb Kondrick attended a meeting of the Services to Older Adults Workgroup of the Anoka County Library on 10/28. F. Library Page Jimmy Heryla and I met for his six-month performance evaluation. G. Five members of the staff received mandated safety training on 10/27. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Library Foundation met on 10/21 to finalize details for soliciting individual contributions for the new library. The Foundation met with Paul Neuhaus and Amanda Henderson of HGA on 10/30 to review the final designs for the donor recognition area in the lobby. The Foundation also prepared and sent a direct mail solicitation of local businesses this month. VII. MISC A. On 10/2 I met with Judy Soule, Business Applications Specialist, of the Anoka County Library about new cash management procedures which have been implemented at the county library. Columbia Heights will begin using these procedures when staff has been trained. B. I presented the proposed 2016 library budget to the City Council at the work session of 10/5. C. City staff, members of the Library Design Task Force, and HGA designers visited four furniture vendors to examine potential furnishing for the new library on 10/2. On 10/29 the group made furniture selections and reviewed fabrics. D. I made a presentation to the Rotary Club of Columbia Heights and Fridley about library services and design details of the new library on 10/21. E. I attended Anoka County Library Management Team meetings on 10/1 and 10/15. F. I met with the Anoka County Library Public Services Team on 10/28. G. Fourteen boxes of books were shipped to Better World Books (BWB.) BWB will attempt to sell books withdrawn from the library collection due to age, condition, and lack of use. They will also accept any excess donations which cannot be added to the collection. BWB will return a portion of the sales to the library or will donate unsold books to agencies supporting literacy in the U.S. and throughout the world. VIII.
