Tantanella FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director Member at Large SUBJECT: September 2015 Operational Report Gary Peterson Council Liaison DATE: September 30, 2015 Renee Dougherty Library Director I.BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A.Fidelity Building Services buffed the hard flooring in the lower level on 9/18. B.The exterior windows were washed on 9/25. C.Thecustodian responsible for cleaning the library quit this month so subs have been doing only basic cleaning while the city searches for a replacement. II.TECHNOLOGY A.Anoka County Library staff Jenn Straumann and Jason Smalley prov Columbia Heights staff in the use of Microsoft SharePoint, the p new collaborative library intranet site. B.I began conversations from 3M staff about RFID and security gates for the new library. III.COLLECTION A.Print books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the May 15th issues of Booklist, Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews. Adult hardcover fiction with October publication dates, popular paperbacks, and urban fiction were also ordered. from the April issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews and School Library Journal. B.Weeding of adult paperback westerns and adult nonfiction 155 - 235 was completed. Weeding of adult music CDs continued. Weekly reports of Columbia Heights were reviewed and items weeded based on condition and estimated future use. IV.PROGRAMS A.A Back-to-School event introducing students to library print and online resources was held on 9/1. Families were encouraged to sign up for library cards on the first day of National Library Card Sign-Up Month. B.A Senior Surf computer class for older adults was offered on 9/2 C.The Friends of the Library met on 9/2. D.The Library Board met on 9/2. E.A LEGO Club for kids was held on 9/10. F.A writing course for adults on finding a literary agent was taught by an instructor from the Loft Literary Center on 9/16.This course was made possible with Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage (Legacy Amendment) funding. G.The adult Fiction Book Club met on 9/16 The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. H.The Adult Non-Fiction Book Club met on 9/18. I.Three sessions of Toddler Storytime were held with ECFE Parent Educator Chris Buzzetta or Bethany Grabow. J.Three sessions of Preschool Storytime were offered by Bethany Grabow, Kelly Olson, or a volunteer childcare provider. K.Two sessions of Baby Read, Baby Grow were led by ECFE Parent EduBuzzetta. L.Conversations Circles, facilitated by a native English speaker, language learners throughout the month. M.One-on-one mentoring for adults learning to read was offered through the Buddy Up and Read program. N.Materials were selected and delivered to At-Home patrons. O.Adult volunteers served the Library this month by leading storytime, delivering materials to at-home patrons, preparing materials for the sale cart, and facilitating book cs. V.STAFF A.Staff hosted a farewell reception for on 9/2. B.Human Resources Director Kelli Bourgeois and I interviewed the eight highest scoring applicants interviews. The finalist met with the City Manager and a conditiffer of employment was extended. C.Clerk Typist Renee Rewitzer and I attended demonstrations by 3M and TechLogic, vendors of radio-frequency identification and automated materials handling systemat Anoka County Libraries. D.Clerk Typist II Kelly Olson and I met for her annual performance. VI.FOUNDATION A.The Library Foundation met on 9/2. The Foundation provided direction to Paul Neuhaus and Amanda Henderson of HGA on donor recognition in the new library. B.The Foundation hosted the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on 9/23 at Murzyn Hall. The foundation raised approximately $1,500 from the event. VII.GRANTS VIII.MISC A.On 9/11, I met with Tamara Schmitz, Stephanie Johnson and Micheala Neu from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization about potential pr new to promote public awareness of water quality and the impact of h the health of the river. The MWMO has donated approximately $600,000 to address stormwater management at the new facility. B.I met with Kevin Hansen, members of the Library Design Task Forcnd Jane Dedering and Erika Frederiksen of HGA to begin preliminary selection of furniture and fixtures for the new library on 9/14. C.I attended the Groundbreaking for the new library on 9/14. D.2016 Detail Budget Books were prepared for the City Council and Library Board. E.I attended the Anoka County Library Management Team meetings on 9/3 and 9/17. F.I met with the Anoka County Library Public Services Team on 9/23. G.The Library returned to regular Saturday hours (10 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) on 9/12 after a summer of closing at 2 p.m. on Saturdays. H.I entered into an arrangement with Better World Books (BWB) for withdrawn collection items and excess book donations. BWB will a discards and donations, returning a portion of the sales to the books to agencies supporting literacy in the U.S. and throughout the w volunteers have begun to evaluate books for sending to BWB.
