Tantanella Member at Large CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS Gary Peterson Council Liaison TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees Renee Dougherty FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director Library Director SUBJECT: July 2015 Operational Report DATE: August 3, 2015 I.BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A.Water seeped into the basement along the west wall (alley) after 7/5 and 7/13. Water also seeped through the slab in the upstairs workroom on 7/13 and soaked the carpet. B.The toilet in the unisex, accessible bathroom on the lower-level has been malfunctioning resulting in an elevated water charges for the second quarter. Public works made a temporary repair but the toilet may need to be replaced. C.Fidelity Building Services buffed the hard flooring in the lower level on 7/17. II.TECHNOLOGY A.The library experienced a failure of the Sirsi-Dynix Integrated Library System on Saturday, 7/11. Checkouts were handled manually but all returns from Saturday could not be received until Monday, 7/13. B.The library telephone system failed on 7/13 resulting in lack of telephone service for the entire day. A repair was attempted but parts were not available. Consequently, Information Services staff accelerated the planned conversion from analog to digital voice-over-internet (VOIP) phones. Phone service was restored to the library on 7/14. Staff continued to review training materials for use of the VOIP phones. III.COLLECTION A.Print books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the March 1, 2015, issue of Kirkus Reviews; the March 15, 2015, issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews and Library Journal, and the April 1, 2015, issues of Booklist and Library Journal. Adult hardcover fiction with August publication dates, recent non-fiction medical books, and popular paperbacks were also ordered. were made from the January and February issues of Kirkus Reviews and the February issues of Booklist and School Library Journal. Replacements and additional copies ordered. B.Weeding of adult paperback romances was completed and paperback westerns were started. Weeding of adult non-fiction in sections 000-133 was completed. Weeding of duplicate hardcover mysteries, music CDs, and teen fiction continued. Weekly reports of Columbia Heights orphan copies were reviewed and items were weeded based on condition and estimated future use. IV.PROGRAMS A.A Senior Surf computer class for older adults was offered on 7/1 B.The Library Board met on 7/1. C.Maker Space programs for teens were held on 7/2 and 7/9. Maker Space programs support STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) education and focused on art and engineering problem-solving and building. D.The Teen Advisory Board met on 7/6. E.Four sessions of Toddler Storytime were offered. Thank you to Officer Terry Nightingale who visited on 7/7. F.Four sessions of Preschool Storytime were offered. G.Three Wacky Wednesday programs were offered for children of all ages. All Wacky Wednesday performers stress the value of reading during their presentations. They encourage kids to continue learning throughout the summer and to borrow library materials about the scientific principles of fire and ice, birds of prey, or puppets - the subjects that were highlighted during July. H.Four Make and Take craft sessions were held after storytimes on Tuesday mornings. I.A Bats and Batik programmed was offered by a naturalist from Three Rivers Parks on 7/7. J.A Star Wars program for kids was held on 7/14. K.A Hunger Games Party for teens was held on 7/16. L.The Adult Non-Fiction Book Club met on 7/17. M.An Anime and Manga Club for teens was held on 7/23. N.A Japanese Folk Art program for children was held on 7/28. O.The adult Fiction Book Club met on 7/29 for a diOf Mice and Men John Steinbeck. P.Two sessions of the American Girl Tea Party were held on 7/29. Q.Conversation Circles for English language learners were offered. R.One-on-one mentoring for adults learning to read was offered through the Buddy Up and Read program. S.Materials were selected and delivered to At-Home patrons. T.Adult volunteers served the Library by delivering materials to at-home patrons, assisting adults learning to speak English, and preparing materials for the August book sale. Teen volunteers helped set up and clean up after programs and register kids for the summer reading program. U.By month-end, 445 children and 199 teens had registered for the 2015 Summer Reading Program. V.STAFF A.met citizens at community picnics at Keyes Park on 7/15 and Circle Terrace Park on 7/24. Bethany promoted the Summer Reading Program and library use with children and parents and I shared information about the design and progress toward the new library. B.Winne Coyne met with the City brand implementation committee on 7/14 and worked to roll out the new logo onto email signature blocks and business cards for library staff. VI.FOUNDATION A.The Library Foundation met on 7/1. The Foundation continued to plan for the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on September 23. They have contacted about raising additional funds for the new library. VII.MISC A.Staff tracked reference interactions during the week of July 13-18 as part of the third MELSA survey period of 2015. B.I met with the Anoka County Library Public Services Team on 6/22. Team members were given an orientation and training on the new county SharePoint intranet site. Electronic fobs were prepared for Columbia Heights staff but at month-end they could not yet access the SharePoint site. C.I attended the Anoka County Library Management Team meeting on 7/23. D.I attended the bid opening for Library Bid Package 2 on 7/29.
