BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Schindler inspected and performed routine maintenance on the elevator on 5/11. B. Commercial Steam Clean cleaned carpets on 5/23 when the library was closed for the Memorial Day holiday. C. Walk-off mats were removed for off-site cleaning by American Rug Laundry and returned on 5/27. II. TECHNOLOGY A. Information Services staff continued to troubleshoot printing problems with public computer #8. The issue had been resolved by month-end. B. An upgrade to the Cybrarian software was installed on 5/14. Cybrarian software governs patron authentication for public computer signup and compiles computer usage statistics. III. COLLECTION A.Print books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the February 15, 2015, issues of Booklist and Library Journal. Adult paperbacks with April and May publication dates were ordered. Children’s selections were made from December 2014 issues of Booklist and Kirkus Reviews. Adult DVDs were ordered. B.Reports of items with multiple holds were reviewed weekly and additional copies purchased as needed. C.Weeding of adult paperbacks was begun. Weekly reports of Columbia Heights orphan copies were reviewed and items were weeded based on condition and estimated future use. Spot weeding was done in the juvenile collection. Weeding of music CDs continued. IV. PROGRAMS A. An Antique and Collectible Appraisal event featuring Mark Moran, a regular guest on PBS Television’s Antiques Roadshow, was held on 5/2. B. The Teen Advisory Board met on 5/4. C. One final session of Baby Read, Baby Grow was offered in partnership with Early Childhood Family Education staff on 5/5. D. The Friends of the Library met on 5/6. The Friends are planning a Scrabble Tournament to be held in November. E. A Senior Surf computer class was offered on 5/6. F. The Library Board met on 5/6. G. The Adult Non-Fiction Book Club met on 5/15. H. A Minute to Win It program for teens was held on 5/21. I. Four kindergarten classes from Valley View Elementary visited the library on 5/22. J. The Adult Book Club met on 5/27 to discuss Jim Fergus’s One Thousand White Women. K. Conversation Circles for English language learners were offered. L. One-on-one mentoring for adults learning to read was offered through the Buddy Up and Read program. M. Bulk loans were prepared for Mini Adventure Club. N. Materials were selected and delivered to At-Home patrons. P. Adult volunteers served the Library this month by delivering materials to at-home patrons, assisting adults learning to read and speak English, instructing patrons using computers, shelf reading, and helping with various programs. V.STAFF A. Throughout the month Children’s Librarian Bethany Grabow visited area schools to encourage reading throughout the summer and to promote free summer programs at the library. Bethany visited Global Academy, Columbia Academy, Immaculate Conception School, as well as Highland, Valley View, and North Park Elementary Schools. B. Staff attended the rollout meetings for the new city branding campaign. C. All full-time staff met with Jane Dedering of HGA on 5/13 to plan the work spaces of the new library. D. Staff participated in Anoka County Library Staff Day at Wargo Nature Center on 5/14. E. A meeting of all Pages was held on 5/19 to arrange the summer schedule. F. Renee Rewitzer successfully completed the probationary period for Clerk Typist II- Adult Services. Renee and I met for her six-month review on 5/12. G. Barb Kondrick attended the meeting of the Anoka County Library Arts and Culture Team on 5/28. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Library Foundation met on 5/13. The Foundation continued their discussion of fundraising and donor recognition at the new library and met with professional fundraiser Sal Di Leo. VII. MISC A. I met with city staff and staff of HGA Architecture and Engineering on 5/6 and 5/27 to discuss building and landscape design. B. I attended the City Council work session on 5/11 when HGA architect Paul Neuhaus presented the final library design. C. I attended and answered questions from the public at an Open House on the new library design held on 5/20. D. I attended the Anoka County Public Services Team meeting on 5/27. E. I met with the Library Design Task Force and HGA staff on 5/27. F. The parking entry of the library was left unlocked sometime between closing on 5/27 and opening on 5/28. The automatic entry/closing mechanism was inspected and it was determined that the closer motor cannot overcome the HVAC pressure to securely latch the door. Replacement of the motor is estimated at $1,800 plus labor for installation. All staff with access to the building will be instructed to make sure that the door is securely locked before leaving the area. VIII.
