I.Adult Programs and Displays
a.The key theme in the main floor lobby area is an ongoing display called, “Coming Soon…a New
Library for Columbia Heights!” with architectural drawings of the interior and exterior of the
new building, floor plans, a site plan and a 3D model of the immediate area.
b.On Saturday, May 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., author and appraiser Mark F. Moran, a frequent
expert on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow, did antique and collectible appraisals for forty-two lucky
people. Another thirty to forty people came just to watch the fun. The big winner of the day
brought in a bronze sculpture that was purchased as scrap metal by the owner’s father several
years ago. Moran said that more research was needed, but he estimated that the sculpture could
bring upwards of $16,000. Comments from participants were very positive and many asked that
the library repeat this program in the future. Two Friends of the Library members created an
antique display in the glass display case to promote the event and also staffed the registration
table during the event. This event was made possible with dollars from Minnesota’s Arts and
Cultural Heritage Fund.
c.A Library Friends member created a D-Day display for the glass display case in the adult reading
room to promote an upcoming (Tuesday, June 2, 6-7:30 p.m.) library history program, “D-Day,
The American Experience,” by local author and historian, John Cox.
d.Five adults attended Senior Surf, a hands-on computer training class designed for people 55+ on
Wednesday, May 6.
e.The Nonfiction Book Club met Friday, May 15. Five adults attended.
f.The Library Book Club met Wednesday, May 27, to discuss “One Thousand White Women” by
James McBride.

at-home patrons, facilitating Conversation Circles and the nonfiction book club, serving as
Reading Buddies for adults learning English, serving as computer tutors, assisting with programs
and completing various tasks in the library.
