SUBJECT: Adult Services —April 2015 Operational Report

1. Adult Programs and Displays
a. The main theme for April was "Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library; Celebrating National
Library Week: April 12 to 18, 2015," which was celebrated throughout the entire month.
Patrons were encouraged to fill out paper conversation balloons, describing one thing that
they've done or learned at the library. An assortment of conversation balloons were displayed in
the library and on the library Facebook page and in -house bookmarks were designed and
distributed to patrons at the circulation desk. Mayor Gary L. Peterson made an official
proclamation at the April 13 City Council Meeting, designating April 12 to 18, 2015 as
"National Library Week."
b. Friends created a display of antiques and collectibles in the glass display case to promote the
upcoming Antique & Collectible Appraisals program on Saturday, May 2.
c. A record - breaking 146 adults attended "The History of Hilltop and Columbia Heights,"
Saturday, April 25, presented by Sara Given from the Anoka County Historical Society.
Comments on the evaluation forms were very positive and expressed a lot of interest in having
other local history programs and also getting a good sound system, microphones and better air
circulation for the new library. A newspaper article and photos appeared in the North Extra
section of the Star Tribune on Wednesday, April 22, featuring interesting local history uncovered
by Ms. Given in preparation for the program.
d. Five adults attended Senior Surf, a hands -on computer training class designed for people 55 +, on
Wednesday, April 1.
e. The Nonfiction Book Club met Friday, April 17. Seven adults attended.
f. The Library Book Club met Wednesday, April 29, to discuss "The Good Lord Bird" by James
McBride. Sixteen adults attended.
g. Seventeen adult volunteers worked over 75 hours in March. Tasks included delivering materials
to at -home patrons, facilitating Conversation Circles, serving as Reading Buddies for adults
learning English, serving as computer tutors, assisting with programs and completing various
tasks in the library.
h. Six At -home patrons checked out a total of 53 items, delivered by volunteers and staff.
i. The Friends held a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the Lighthouse of Columbia Heights on
Saturday, April 17. They also assisted with the Central Avenue "Earth Day" Cleanup and served
as greeters for the History of Hilltop and Columbia Heights Library program on April 25.
II. Meetings
a. The Library Board met Wednesday, April 1.
b. The Friends of the Library met Wednesday, April 1 for a luncheon meeting.
c. The Foundation met Wednesday, April 8.
