SUBJECT: March Operational Report
DATE: March 31, 2015
I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. Fidelity Building Services buffed the Activity Room and Break Room floors on 3/20.
B. Back door lock was repaired and automatic door opener adjusted to speed opening.
II. TECHNOLOGY
A. Staff discovered that the library's first- generation I -pad cannot handle newer storytime
apps.
III. COLLECTION
A. Print books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the December 2014
issues of Booklist and Kirkus Reviews, and the January 2015 issues of Booklist and
Library Journal. Adult fiction with April publication dates was ordered. Children's
selections were made from the November 2014 issues of School Library Journal, Booklist
and Kirkus Reviews. Children's audiobooks were ordered. Adult DVDs and adult
audiobooks were ordered.
B. Reports of items with multiple holds were reviewed weekly and additional copies
purchased as needed.
C. Weeding of non - circulating adult fiction L -R was completed. Weekly reports of Columbia
Heights "orphan" copies were reviewed and items were weeded based on condition and
estimated future use. Weeding in children's fiction, adult music, and adult and children's
DVDs continued.
IV. PROGRAMS
A. The Teen Advisory Board met on 3/2.
B. Four Beginning Reader Story times were offered this month.
C. A Senior Surf computer class was offered on 3/4.
D. The Library Board met on 3/4.
E. The Friends of the Library met on 2/4.
F. A program for adults featuring the Birdchick, author Sharon Stiteler, was held on 3/11.
G. A LEGO Club for kids was held on 3/12.
H. A writing class for adults was taught by an instructor from the Loft Literary Center on
3/18.
I. The Adult Non - Fiction Book Club met on 3/20.
J. The Adult Book Club met on 3/25 for discussion of Chard Harbach's The Art of Fielding.
K. Conversation Circles for English language learners were offered.
L. One -on -one mentoring for adults learning to read in the Buddy Up and Read program was
offered.
M. Five sessions of Toddler Storytime were offered.
N. Five sessions of Preschool Storytime were offered.

O. Four sessions of Baby Read, Baby Grow were taught in partnership with Early Childhood
Family Education staff from ISD 13.
P. Beginning Reader Storytime was launched and four sessions were offered.
Q. Experiments in Paint, a program for children, was held on 3/30.
R. Libraries R 4 Making, a program for teens, was held on 3/31.
S. Bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School and Mini Adventure Club.
T. Six classes from Immaculate Conception School visited.
U. Federal and state tax forms were displayed.
V. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons.
W. Adult volunteers donated service to the Library this month by assisting adults learning to
read and speak English, pulling materials for weeding review, and assisting patrons using
computers.
V. STAFF
A. Evening Supervisor John Brosnahan announced his retirement, effective March 31.
B. Page Andrew Hester stopped working without written notice so has been terminated as of
March 6.
C. Three new Pages, Rosa Boda, James Heryla, and Melissa Serafin, completed training and
began working on the regular schedule on March 30.
D. New Library Clerk Winnie Coyne oversaw the training of the new Pages with assistance
from other staff.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Library Foundation met on March 4 with all members in attendance. Gail Olson
announced her resignation from the Board. Foundation members presented a plaque to
Todd and Tawnya Estrem of Tasty Pizza for their many years of support and donations to
the annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser.
VII. MISC
A. I attend City Council Work Sessions on 3/2 and 3/23 when information about library site
orientation and building schematic design was presented.
B. I attended planning meetings for the new library with HGA and city staff on 3/4, 3/11,
3/18, and 3/26.
C. I met with the management team of the Anoka County Library on 3/5.
D. I met with the Library Design Task Force and HGA on 3/11.
E. I participated in a Public Open House to share schematic designs for the new library on
3/26. Approximately 75 people attended, asked engaged questions, and shared opinions
about the building design and the site.
F. I submitted the 2014 Annual Report to the State Library.
