Date: January 26, 2015
I.PROGRAMS
a.Bulk loans of materials were prepared for ICS (1 bin for each of 6 classes) and Adventure Club.
b.Classes from ICS visited on 1/12, 1/13, 1/14, and 1/15.
c.We promoted families reading together on 1/2 during Drop Everything and Read Day. Families were
encouraged to read together and learn tips on how to make reading every day a priority at home. 5
people attended this event and enjoyed hot cocoa and good books.
d.On 1/3, the library hosted a live Candyland event coordinated and sponsored by a local Girl Scout
troop. The girls created all of the props for the game to earn their silver badge. 25 people played
Candyland throughout the afternoon.
e.Teen Advisory Board (TAB) met on 1/5. Eight people attended the meeting. We did some getting-
to-know-you activities, discussed program ideas for summer, and talked about volunteer
opportunities for teens in the library.
f.Pajama Time Family Book Night (formerly family storytime) on 1/13 featured books and crafts. The
theme was Throwback Tuesday: Books Mom and Dad Liked When They Were Kids. We celebrated
th
Winnie the Pooh’s 100 birthday by making masks and practiced our letter writing by making
snowmen out of the letters of our names. We read books nominated by parents as their childhood
favorites; stories included Berenstain Bears and the Truth, Corduroy, and The Foot Book.
g.Make & Take Tuesdays continued this month. Each Tuesday after storytime, we open up the
Activity Room for people to make a craft. Craft time is eagerly anticipated by the kids and it is a
good opportunity to practice cutting, coloring, and writing skills.
h.Teens gathered to discuss great books at Books & Bites on 1/22. Four teens attended this program
and gave reviews of books they’d read recently and thought others would enjoy. I shared some of
my new favorites as well. We had a thoughtful discussion about the current trend of dystopian
novels and what our lives would be like if the government controlled things like what we look like
and who we can be friends with or date.
i.Recruits descended on the library on 1/23 for the Superhero Academy. 24 attendees listened to a
storytime, then completed eight other tasks challenging body and mind. When they finished the
tasks, they brought their completed checklists to the superhero headquarters to receive a
graduation certificate. The citizens of Columbia Heights should sleep soundly knowing we have so
many superheroes in our midst.
j.The Winter Reading Program, Book Warms, continued this month. Currently, ____ kids and ____
teens have signed up and committed to reading and using the library.
