HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Barb K TO: Renee Dougherty, Library Director FROM: Barb Kondrick, Adult Services Librarian SUBJECT: Adult Services –January 2015 Operational Report DATE: January 30, 2015 I.Adult Programs and Displays a.Displays include a “Winter Jackets” bulletin board, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside!” and “Winter Escape Plans” book displays. b.Five adults attended “Senior Surf”, a hands-on computer training class on Wednesday, Jan. 7. The Star Tribune Newspaper covered the program in the North Extra section on Wednesday, Jan 21, 2015. http://www.startribune.com/local/north/289190031.html c.The Nonfiction Book Club was held on Friday, Jan. 16. Four adults attended. Favorite titles included “Hope: Entertainer of the Century” by Richard Zoglin, “World Order” by Henry Kissinger, “Minnesota Outdoor Wonders” by Jim Gilbert and “Jim Gilbert’s Minnesota Nature Notes” by Jim Gilbert, and “A Book of Secrets: Illegitimate Daughters, Absent Fathers ” by Michael Holroyd. d.The Library Book Club met on Wednesday, Jan. 21 to discuss “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Fourteen adults attended. e.Volunteers facilitated Conversation Circles for recent immigrants every Wednesday and Thursday from 1-2 p.m. for adults to practice their English speaking skills. Volunteers also worked one-on-one with adults working to improve their English reading skills. f.At-home patrons received a total of 65 items, delivered by volunteers and staff. g.As part of the Winter Jackets Reading Program, on January 28, local author Colin Mustful discussed stories of people and events of the Spirit Lake Massacre of 1857 and also talked about the process of getting a book published and marketed, and the process of building a reading audience. Fourteen adults attended the event, including one woman who spoke of the hardships her American Indian grandparents endured when they were separated from family and friends at the ages of 5 and 7 to attend Indian boarding schools. Comments on evaluation forms were very positive and several attendees asked that we try to schedule more author talks in the future. The Friends of the Library provided refreshments and served as greeters. II.Meetings a.The Library Board met on Wednesday, Jan. 7. b.The Friends of the Library met on Monday, Jan. 5. Starting in February, Friends meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of each month, September through June. III.Projects a.Weeding continued for music CDs and children’s and adult DVDs. b.Orders were placed for library supplies and children’s and adults’ DVDs. c.Tax forms are starting to arrive. So far, we have received Minnesota MN1, Minnesota Property Tax/Renter’s Rebate booklets and IRS 1040EZ. We were notified that the IRS will not distribute any Instruction Booklets through the libraries this year and they are reducing the selection of printed forms available through libraries.
