CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: November 2014 Operational Report DATE: December 3, 2014 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT II. TECHNOLOGY A. The city experienced a major server failure on the afternoon of 11/20 which disrupted the integrated library system and public internet access. III. COLLECTION A. Books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the August issues of Library Journal and the September issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, and Library Journal. Popular paperbacks, replacements, and new editions of adult non-fiction were ordered. Juvenile selections were made from the July issues of Kirkus Reviews, and School Library Journal and the August issue of Booklist. Popular children’s titles were added. Children’s music and audiobooks and DVDs for children and adults were added. B. Reports of items with multiple holds were reviewed weekly and additional copies purchased as needed. When there are more than eight holds for an item, another copy is added to the collection. C. Weeding continued in adult non-fiction 975-979. Weekly reports of COH “orphan” copies were reviewed and weeded based on condition and estimated future use. IV. PROGRAMS A. The Friends of the Library met on 11/3. B. Digital Photography Basics for Teens was held on 11/3. C. The Teen Advisory Board met on 11/3. D. A Senior Surf computer class was offered on 11/5. E. The Library Board met on 11/5. F. The Homework Zone, with assistance from a Minnesota Reading Corp volunteer, was open on three Wednesdays. G. Volunteers facilitated Conversation Circles for English language learners and provided one-on-one mentoring for adults learning to read in the Buddy Up and Read program. H. A beginning painting class for adults was offered on 11/12. I. A LEGO Club for kids was held on 11/13. J. Four Head Start classes visited. K. The Non-Fiction Book Club for adults met on 11/21. L. Two sessions of Preschool Storytime were offered. M. Three sessions of Toddler Storytime were offered. N. International Games Day was celebrated with programs for kids on 11/25 and 11/26. O. The adult Fiction Book Club met on 11/26/14 to discuss Still Life by Louise Penny. P. Seven bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School classes and Mini Adventure Club. Q. Nine classes from Immaculate Conception School visited. R. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. S. Adult volunteers donated 47 hours of service. V. STAFF A. New Clerk-Typist II Renee Rewitzer began on 11/3 and has been learning the responsibilities of the position. She was introduced to the City Council at the 11/24 meeting. B. Children’s Librarian Bethany Grabow attended the Anoka County Library Early Literacy Team meeting on 11/18 and observed a storytime at the Mississippi branch on 11/6 as part of an early literacy quality improvement process within county libraries. C. Bethany represented the library at English Language Family Night on 11/6 at the Columbia Heights High School and provided a storytime at a Mini Adventure Club open house at the Family Center on 11/19. D. Adult Services Librarian Barb Kondrick attended the MELSA Adult Programming Interest Group meeting on 11/12. E. Page Andrew Hester and I met for his performance evaluation on 12/18. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Library Foundation did not meet in November. VII. MISC A. The open Library Clerk position was posted and applications were received through 12/1. B. I met with the City Manager, Community Development Director, Finance Director, and Public Works Director on 11/6 to brainstorm next steps in the library construction project. C. I met with the management team of the Anoka County Library on 11/13. D. I met with the Yes! A New Library committee on 11/5 and 11/18. VIII.
