HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Bethany To: Renee Dougherty, Library Director From: Bethany Grabow, Children’s Librarian Subject: October Operational Report Date: October 30, 2014 I.PROGRAMS a.Bulk loans of materials were prepared for ICS (1 bin for each of 6 classes) and Adventure Club. b.Classes from ICS visited on 10/13, 10/14, and 10/15. c.Teen Advisory Board (TAB) met on 10/6. Four people attended the meeting. We did some getting- to-know-you activities, discussed program ideas and marketing ideas. Teens filled out a survey about library space and services for teens. d.READ Dogs took place on four Mondays in October. Six children signed up to read to Haylee this session. e.The adult and children’s department joined together to hold an event to celebrate Polish Heritage Month. Traditional Polish crafts, Polish music, and family activities took place from 11:30 to 2. Mosaica performed Eastern European music from 2 to 3. 67 adults and children attended this program! f.LEGO Club took place on 10/9. 16 kids and teens built creations out of LEGO bricks. g.Family storytime took place on 10/14. The theme was Fancy Nancy (a popular children’s book series). Attendees were encouraged to dress fancy and they delivered. 54 people, many dressed to the nines, attended this program! h.Columbia Heights schools were off on October 15-17, so we had several programs for children and teens. On 10/15 we held Smart About Money: Financial Literacy for Youth. Taught by someone from the Minnesota Department of Commerce, participants learned about needs vs. wants and the value of saving. We also had Books & Bites for teens to share books they’ve read and enjoyed. On 10/16, we had a program for grades 3-5 called Color, Camera, Autumn! Digital Photography + Stamp Prints; teachers from Silverwood Park showed kids how to use digital cameras, how to take better pictures, and how to make a tree-themed craft. Teen volunteers decorated the Activity Room as a spooky mansion and teens played live-action Clue at the Teen Murder Mystery program that afternoon. (Miss Scarlet was the first murderer, Mrs. Peacock in the second round.) Grades K-1 learned Henri Matisse’s “painting with scissors” technique to make their own collages on 10/17. Families attended Coyote Sing, a puppet show infused with American Indian culture and history on 10/18. i.Baby Read, Baby Grow, a program that is part of the early literacy collaboration between the library and the Columbia Heights School District’s Early Childhood Family Education, concluded their session at the end of this month. Babies ages birth through 24 months listened to books, songs, and had fun with lap bounces. j.Homework Zone started on 10/29. I coordinated with Minnesota Reading Corps to schedule a volunteer to help students in grades K-12 with homework questions. Orders were also placed in the following areas: replacements and adds and audiobooks. b.Weeding of J fiction continued this month. III.PROJECTS a.Prepared programs for October and November. b.Planned crafts for Polish-American Heritage event. c.Planned and advertised Fancy Nancy storytime d.Created Teen Read Week daily challenges. e.Planned storytimes. f.Finalized programs for December through February for Heights Happenings. g.Filled out paperwork for my performance evaluation. IV.GRANTS, MEETINGS, COMMUNITY a.10/2: Represented library at English Language Family Night at Valley View Elementary. Around 100 children and their parents attended this event. b.10/8-10/9: Attended Minnesota Library Association annual conference. c.10/21: Attended Early Literacy Team meeting at ACL. d.10/23: Represented library at Valley View Elementary’s Family Literacy Night. Approximately 170 children and their parents attended this event. V.STAFF a.This month the major projects page staff worked on are as follows: selection tools, and weeding. b.Kelly Olson worked on book orders. She also assisted in the many bulk loan bins we had this month. She completed her usual tasks including month end reports, magazines, counting money, receiving books, and purchase requests. c.Michelle Wermerskirchen worked on the winter events calendar and sent out press releases for upcoming programs.
