CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: October 2014 Operational Report DATE: November 4, 2014 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Fidelity Building Services buffed the activity and staff room floors on 10/10. B. Public Works staff prepped the landscape for winter on 10/29. II. TECHNOLOGY III. COLLECTION A. Books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the July and August issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, and Library Journal. Adult hard cover fiction with November publication dates and popular paperbacks were also ordered. Juvenile selections were made from the June and July issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, and School Library Journal. Adult audiobooks were also added. B. Reports of items with multiple holds were reviewed weekly and additional copies purchased as needed. When there are more than eight holds for an item, another copy is added to the collection. C. Weeding was completed in adult non-fiction 960-975. Weekly reports of COH “orphan” copies were reviewed and weeded based on condition and estimated future use. IV. PROGRAMS A. A Senior Surf computer class was offered on 10/1. B. The Library Board met on 10/1. C. A kick-off celebration for Polish American Heritage month featuring European music group Mosaica was held on 10/2. D. The Friends of the Library met on 10/6. E. The Teen Advisory Board met on 10/6. F. R.E.A.D. Dogs was offered on 10/6, 10/13, 10/20, and 10/27. G. Two Loft Writing Classes for adults were offered: Creating Characters on 10/7 and Senior Moments: Starting Your Writing Project at 55+ on 10/29. H. Volunteers facilitated Conversation Circles or provided one-on-one mentoring for English language learners and emerging adult readers on five occasions this month. I. A LEGO Club for kids was held on 10/9. J. Teen Read Week, 10/12-10/18, was celebrated with daily contests and prizes. K. Family Storytime, featuring fictional character Fancy Nancy, was held on 10/14. L. Smart About Money: Financial Literacy for Youth, was held on 10/15. M. Classes from Metro North Adult Basic Education visited the library on 10/15 and 10/22. N. Books and Bytes, a teen book club, was held on 10/15. O. Color, Camera, Action, a photography class for children was held on 10/16. P. A live-action Teen Murder Mystery game was offered on 10/16. Q. An art class for kindergarteners and first-graders, Henri Matisse’s Sea World, was offered on 10/17. R. The Non-Fiction book club for adults met on 10/17. S. A Coyote Sing! program for children was offered on 10/18 and funded by Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. T. Kathleen Kulberg offered an introduction to genealogy and architectural research, If Your Walls Could Talk, on 10/22. U. Homework Zone began on 10/29 and will be available on Wednesday afternoons through mid-December. Homework Zone is offered with assistance from a volunteer from the Minnesota Reading Corp. V. Recognition of Banned Books Week continued throughout the month. W. Four sessions of Preschool Storytime were offered. X. Four sessions of Toddler Storytime were offered. Y. Three sessions of Baby Read, Baby Grow were presented in partnership with the Early Childhood and Family Education department of ISD 13. Z. The adult Fiction Book Club met on 10/29 to discuss Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler. AA. Seven bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School classes and Adventure Club. BB. Six classes from Immaculate Conception School visited. CC. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. DD. Adult volunteers donated 31 hours of service. V. STAFF A. Clerk Typist II- Adult Services Stacey Hendren met with the City Safety Committee on 10/8. B. Stacey’s last day of employment was 10/10; a small farewell celebration was held. C. Clerk Renee Rewitzer was the highest scoring applicant for the Clerk-Typist II position. She accepted the employment offer and began on 11/3. D. Children’s Librarian Bethany Grabow attended the Anoka County Library Early Literacy Team meeting on 10/21. E. Bethany represented the library at English Language Family Night on 10/2 and Family Literacy Night on 10/23 at Valley View Elementary. F. Bethany, Barb and I attended the Minnesota Library Association Conference on 10/8-10/9. G. Staff took advantage of the Flu Shot Clinic on 10/30 to get immunized against influenza. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Library Foundation met on 10/1 and 10/29. VII. MISC A. The new procedure for delivery, utilizing carts instead of bins, was formally started on 10/1. The new process is faster, and requires less bending and lifting, thereby reducing repetitive stress and back injuries. Columbia Heights Library receives delivery of materials on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday each week. B. I met with the Assistant City Manager/Director of Human Resources to score applications for the Clerk Typist II position on 10/14 and to interview finalists on 10/21. C. I met with the City Manager, Community Development Director, Finance Director, and Public Works Director on 10/7 to brainstorm next steps in the library construction project. D. I met with the management team of the Anoka County Library on 10/2 and 10/16. E. I met with the Yes! A New Library committee on 10/7, 10/14, 10/21, and 10/28. F. I attended the Columbia Heights Council Candidate forum on 10/20. VIII.
