I.Adult Programs and Displays
a.Celebrating October as Polish Heritage Month, the library collaborated with Sister Cities
International of Columbia Heights for a special event on Saturday, October 4. Sister
Cities members, dressed in traditional Polish costumes, greeted visitors and served
Polish cookies and beverages. Volunteers and the children’s librarian assisted children
and adults in making traditional Polish crafts. Sister Cities members were available to
discuss Polish history and culture; and patrons of all ages enjoyed a musical
performance by Mosaica, a troop of nine musicians who played music from Poland and
other eastern European countries. Funding for Mosaica was provided by Legacy dollars.
Approximately 75 people attended the event.
b. “I Read Banned Books,” a contest encouraging patrons to think and comment about
book banning, censorship and the freedom to read, continued through October.
Participants were included in a drawing for a free “Banned Books” tote bag or mug.
c.Four adults attended “Senior Surf”, a hands-on computer training class on Wednesday,
Oct. 1.
d.Two Loft writing classes were offered on October 7 and 22. A total of 16 adults
attended.
e.The Nonfiction Book Club was held on Friday, Oct. 17. Six adults attended.
f.“If Your Walls Could Talk,” a program to teach participants how to research their own
house’s history, past residents and architect or builder, was held on Wednesday, Oct.
22. Eight adults attended.
g.The Library Book Club met on Wednesday, Oct. 29, to discuss “Calling Me Home” by
Julie Kibler. Seventeen adults attended.
h.Two classes, a total of 32 adults from the Adult Learning Center, toured the library and
attended library orientation sessions on Oct. 15 and 27.
i.At-home patrons received a total of 62 items, delivered by volunteers and staff.
II.Meetings
a.The Foundation met on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
b.The Library Board met on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
c.The Friends of the Library met on Monday, Oct. 6 at Dragon House.
d.Barb attended the MLA (Minnesota Library Association) annual conference in Mankato
on October 9-10.
III.Projects
a.Barb covered two online reference (chat line) shifts for AskMN.
b.Weeding continued for music CDs and children’s and adult DVDs.
c.Orders were placed for library supplies and adult audio books.
IV.Volunteers
a.Eight adult volunteers completed 31 hours of volunteer time—delivering books to at-
home patrons, pricing books and refilling the book sale cart, serving as book club
facilitators, serving as reading buddies for adults working on their English language
reading and speaking skills, and completing various tasks at the library.
