TO: Renee Dougherty, Library Director FROM: Barb Kondrick, Adult Services Librarian SUBJECT: Adult Services -September 2014 Operational Report DATE: Sept. 29, 2014 I.Adult Programs and Displays a.September Bulletin board and book displays included “Banned Books – Celebrate Your Freedom to Read,” “Favorite Non-fiction Books.” b.“I Read Banned Books,” a contest encouraging patrons to think and comment about book banning, censorship and the freedom to read, started during Banned Books Week, Sept. 22-27 and continues through October. Participants will be included in a drawing for a free “Banned Books” tote bag or mug. c.Five adults attended “Senior Surf”, a hands-on computer training class on Wed. Sept. 3. d.Fourteen adults attended “Volunteer Opportunities” sessions on Tue. Sept. 8. e.Four adults attended “Avoiding Scams and Frauds: Financial Literacy for Seniors” on Wed. Sept. 10. f.Local musicians Leo and Kathy Lara were featured performers for “Saturday Live!” at the library, Sat. Sept. 13. Twenty-six adults and ten children attended the program, listening to, participating, and learning about music from several South American countries. g.Eighteen adults attended “The Story of Architect Avenue” on Wed. Sept. 17. h.The Nonfiction Book Club was held on Fri. Sept. 20. Six adults attended. i.The Library Book Club met on Wed. Aug. 24, to discuss “The Other Typist” by Suzanne Rindell. Thirteen adults attended. j.The Sister Cities set up a Polish Culture and Heritage display in the adult reading room. k.Barb selected materials for at-home patrons for a total of 22 items. II.Meetings a.The Foundation met on Wed., Sept. 3. b.The Library Board met on Wed. Sept. 3. c.The Friends of the Library met on Mon. Sept. 8. They voted to donate $200 for beverages and supplies for library programs and meetings. d.Barb attended a two-day workshop, Tue. And Wed., Sept 16-17 on arts programming for older adults called “Creative Aging,” presented by Lifetime Arts and sponsored by MELSA. e.Barb attended the ACL adult programming group meeting on Wed. Sept. 24. III.Projects a.Winter programming was completed and copy was finalized for Heights Happenings. b.Barb covered two online reference (chat line) shifts for AskMN. c.Weeding is in progress for music CDs and children’s and adult DVDs. d.Orders were placed for library supplies, DVDs and music CDs. IV.Volunteers a.Six adult volunteers completed 30 hours of volunteer time—delivering books to at- home patrons, pricing books and refilling the book sale cart, serving as book club facilitators, serving as reading buddies for adults working on their English language reading and speaking skills, and completing various tasks at the library.
