CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: July 2014 Operational Report DATE: July 31, 2014 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Aide Electric repaired a defective emergency exit sign on 7/11. B. A Saver’s Switch was installed on the library’s main electrical panel enabling Xcel Energy to interrupt service (heating and air conditioning systems only) during periods of peak use. In return for its flexibility the library receives a discount on electric rates. Power would not be interrupted for more than fifteen minutes per hour and lighting and computer systems would remain operational. The discount is available even if Xcel does not activate the switch. Saver’s Switches have been installed in all city buildings. C. Fidelity Building Services buffed floors on 7/18. II. TECHNOLOGY A. The Library continued to operate with only seven of eight public internet computers due to ongoing problems with the hard-drive and/or power supply in one of the machines. III. COLLECTION th A. Books were ordered weekly. Adult selections were made from the April 15 issue of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews and Library Journal. Adult hard cover fiction with August publication dates, popular paperbacks, and books requested by patrons were also th purchased. Juvenile selections were made from the February and April 15 issues of th Booklist and the March 15 issue of Kirkus Reviews Replacement and additional copies of popular juvenile titles were added. Juvenile audiobooks were added. B. Reports of items with multiple holds were reviewed weekly and additional copies purchased as needed. C. Weeding was completed in adult mystery paperbacks F-H and adult Non-Fiction 920s. Weekly reports of COH “orphan” copies in the catalog were reviewed and weeded based on condition and estimation of probable future use. Weeding was completed in the juvenile quartos. IV. PROGRAMS A. One “Crafternoon” program for teens was offered. B. The Teen Advisory Board met on 7/7. C. Renee proctored two examinations for a student taking an online course through Minnesota State University-Moorhead. D. The Library Board met on 7/2. E. An evening Family Storytime was held on 7/8. F. Three toddler storytimes were held. G. Four “Make and Take” craft programs for children were held. H. One session of READ Dogs was offered. I. Four sessions of preschool storytime were offered. J. Four “Wacky Wednesday” programs for kids were held. K. Inflation 101, a balloon-tying instructional program for teens, was held on 7/10. L. A class from the Adult Basic Education Center visited on 7/11. M. A Tae Kwon Do demonstration event for all ages was held on 7/14. N. Two Anime and Manga Club events for teens were held on 7/17 and 7/31. O. The adult Non-Fiction Book Club met on 7/18. P. Abrakadoodle presented a Glow-in-the-Dark program for kids on 7/18. Q. Mo Willems Book Day was celebrated on 7/21. R. A Recycled Runway program for teens was presented by the Textile Center of Minnesota on 7/24. S. The adult Fiction Book Club met on 7/30 to discuss The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. T. Two American Girl Tea Parties for girls were held on 7/30. U. Bulk loans were prepared for Adventure Club and Mini Adventure Club classrooms. V. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. W. Adult volunteers donated 33 hours of service. Teen volunteers continued to help register and track progress of kids in the Bookawocky Summer Reading Program. V. STAFF A. Library Clerk Renee Rewitzer and I met for her six-month performance evaluation. B. Kelly Olson and I met for her annual performance evaluation. C. Staff tracked reference interactions with patrons from July 13-19, the third MELSA Survey Week of 2014. D. Bethany met with the Early Literacy Team of the Anoka County Library on 7/29. E. Barb participated in the MELSA Adult Program Interest group on 7/30. F. Bethany, Barb, and I shared information with the public at the Police Department Community Picnic in Sullivan Park on 7/17. G. Bethany staffed the Police Department’s Eat and Greet Picnic in the Sheffield Terrace neighborhood on 7/25. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Library Foundation met on 7/2. Library staff prepared posters and tickets for the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser to be held on 9/10. VII. MISC A. I met with the Finance Director and City Manager to present a proposed 2015 budget. B. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 7/10. C. I met with Anoka County Library staff to prepare for new method of delivery utilizing a larger truck with a power lift and wheeled carts instead of bins. Estimated start date for new delivery is mid-September. VIII. GRANTS st A. All year five expenses to be reimbursed through the 21 Century Community Learning Centers grant were submitted to ISD 13 by 7/31. IX.
