TH
A.REQUEST FOR MULTI-WAY STOP SIGNS AT HAYES STREET AND 39
AVENUE
The City received a petition requesting multi-way stop signs at the intersection of Hayes
th
Street and 39 Avenue. The concern is the speed of traffic with the number of children
and pedestrians in the area.
th
Currently traffic stops in the east and west direction on 39 Avenue at Hayes Street.
thth
South and north bound traffic stops at 37 Avenue and 40 Avenue, respectively. The
sloped landscape on the southwest corner limits visibility somewhat; however, drivers
are able to see conflicting traffic.
The Police Department reviewed accident records and found four reported accidents in
the last five years, one in 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Only one accident was at the
th
intersection and involved an impaired driver running the stop sign on 39 Avenue.
Letters requesting attendance at tonight’s meeting were mailed to all petitioners;
however, no petitioners were present.
Tyler stated that of all the traffic accidents only one was at the intersection, and
was caused by an intoxicated driver running the stop sign. Clerkin feels there is no
need for multiple stop signs. Doty felt that a car and van parked on the street presented
more of a hindrance to the intersection than anything else. Olson stated this is a clear,
busy intersection that is already signed. Schmitt agreed, the only interference she saw
were the parked vehicles. Austin reiterated that the only accident related to the

guidelines for a stop sign, this doesn’t even come close.
Motion by Tyler to deny the request to install multi-way stop signs at the
th
intersection of 39 Avenue and Hayes Street. Motion seconded by Doty. Motion
carried unanimously.
