I.Adult Programs and Displays
a.Senior Surf—a beginning computer class for seniors, taught by instructors from the
Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging--was held Wednesday, May 7. Five seniors
participated in the program with many more on a waiting list.
b.Loft Writing Class: Creative Writing Sampler—a hands-on writing class taught by a
published writer/instructor from the Loft—was held on Tuesday, May 13. This program
was funded through MELSA with State Legacy dollars. Nineteen adults attended.
c.May bulletin board and book display themes included, “Master the Art of Reading” and
“Nonfiction Favorites.”
d.The Nonfiction Bookclub was held on Friday, May 16, facilitated by Catherine Vesley.
Four adults attended.
e.The Library Bookclub met on Wednesday, May 28, to discuss “Orphan Train” by
Christina Baker Kline. Fourteen adults attended.
f.Brain fitness games continue to interest library users. Staff has discovered that the
games are great conversation openers, encouraging patrons to begin conversing with
staff members. Staff has commented that many patrons seem to feel more confident
about approaching staff with other questions and comments.
g.Barb selected materials for four at-home patrons, for a total of 23 items.
II.Meetings
a.The Friends of the Columbia Heights Library met Monday, May 5. The treasurer’s report
showed a balance of $1,110.70, which included $220 remaining in Connie Carlson’s
memorial fund. The Friends approved approximately $655 to purchase adult brain
fitness games and a children’s Owl-phabet rug for children’s story times and other early
literacy programs for young children. The Friends are holding a pancake breakfast
fundraiser at the Lighthouse on Friday, June 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
b.The Foundation met on Wednesday, May 14.
c.The Library Board met on Wednesday, May 7.
III.Projects
a.Staff attended Anoka County Library Staff Day at Bunker Hills on Thursday, May 15,
2014, which featured a customer service training program.
b.Librarians Barb and Bethany met to plan library activities for the day of the Jamboree
Parade. Plans include a registration table for kids summer reading program, a photo
booth encouraging people to “Show me your library card,” a “Wheel of Fortune” type
game with small prizes for participants who correctly answer a trivia question about the
library, and giveaway buttons or fans promoting support for a new library. Library
Board, Friends, and Foundation members are invited to participate.
c.Anoka County Master Gardeners put up a display on carpenter ants in the Adult Reading
Room.
d.DVDs and supplies were ordered.
e.Barb and Stacey collaborated with the Friends to design a new Friends membership
brochure.
f.Weeding continued for adult audiobooks and music CDs.
IV.Volunteers
a.Eight adult volunteers completed 51 hours of volunteer time—delivering materials to at-
home patrons, pricing sale books, refilling the book sale cart, serving as “Reading
Buddies,” and “Conversation Circle” facilitators, serving as book club facilitators and
completing various tasks at the library.
