CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: April 2014 Operational Report DATE: April 30, 2014 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Exterior windows were washed on 4/15. B. The children’s department had minor flooding along the west wall on 4/29. II. TECHNOLOGY A. Information Services purchased, formatted, and installed four new computers on the circulation desks. The computers which were replaced were using the Windows XP operating system which is no longer supported by Microsoft. B. Information Services has also been troubleshooting in-library access to electronic databases provided by MELSA, the Electronic Library for Minnesota, and Anoka County/Columbia Heights Libraries. At month-end in-library access to all databases was functioning well. III. COLLECTION A. Weekly book orders were placed. Adult selections were made from the January and February issues of Booklist and Kirkus Reviews and the February issues of Library Journal. Adult paperback bestsellers were added. Juvenile selections were made from the December, January, and February issues of Kirkus and the January issue of Booklist. Replacement and additional copies of popular children’s titles were added. B. Reports of books, movies, and music with multiple holds were reviewed weekly and additional copies were purchased as needed. C. Weeding, using the Collection HQ “collection check” report was completed in adult nonfiction 793-819. Romance paperbacks (E-L) were weeded for condition and use. Each week reports of COH “orphan” copies remaining in the Anoka County Library catalog were reviewed and weeded based on condition and estimation of probable future use. IV. PROGRAMS A. The first “Senior Surf” computer class was held on 4/2. A Senior Link Age Line instructor helped five students learn how to use computer hardware and navigate the internet. B. “Bike U,” a bicycle maintenance seminar for adults, was held on 4/5. C. The Library Board met on 4/2. D. The Friends of the Library met for lunch at the Dragon House on 4/7. They also created a display of historical objects for the Maud Hart Lovelace program. E. Three toddler storytimes were offered. F. An evening family storytime was offered on 4/8. G. Four preschool storytimes were offered, including the 4/15 “Storytime with a Cop” featuring Officer Terry Nightingale. H. Anoka County Child and Teen Checkups staff distributed information to parents and children at the 4/3 and 4/14 storytimes. I. R.E.A.D Dogs was offered on Monday evenings. J. The inaugural Teen Advisory Board meeting was held 4/7. K. A “Minute to Win It” program was held on 4/ 11. L. National Library Week was celebrated with a mayoral proclamation and customer feedback program around the theme “Lives Change @ Your Library.” M. Early Childhood and Family Education staff from ISD 13 held two ECFE outreach events at the library. N. A Maud Hart Lovelace program was presented by Minnesota History Center staff on 4/19. O. Three examinations were proctored for an adult from Bellevue University. P. The adult fiction book club met on 4/30 to discuss One Summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson. Q. Brain fitness puzzles and games were made available in the library to enhance memory, focus, and cognitive function. R. A drop-in e-book class was held on 4/23. S. Bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School (ICS), Adventure Club, Mini-Adventure Club, and ECFE. T. Six classes from ICS visited to borrow books. U. Tax forms were distributed throughout the month and staff responded to numerous requests for special forms and made many referrals to tax preparation assistance sites. V. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. W. Adult volunteers contributed 50 hours of service, serving as reading “buddies” for adults, pricing and stocking the booksale cart, pulling materials for weeding review, and delivering materials to homebound patrons. V. STAFF A. Kelly and Stacey received training in creating and maintaining serial holdings records in the integrated library system. Correct serial records, for annual travel and legal publications, will allow catalog users to see that Columbia Heights owns a particular publication. B. Bethany attended the Valley View Elementary Carnival on 4/11. C. Bethany met with the early literacy team of the Anoka County Library on 4/15. D. Bethany met with the Summer Reading Program team of ACL on 9/16. E. Barb participated in the ACL Service to Older Adults Work group on 4/23. F. Bethany attended training for providing storytime for children on the autism spectrum. G. Bethany visited second grade classes at North Park on 4/30. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Library Foundation met on 4/2. VII. MISC A. The Library Task Force met on 4/1 to draft a letter to the Council reiterating their 2013 recommendation to build a new library and advancing two preferred sites, the former NEI site and Huset Park adjacent to Murzyn Hall. B. I attended a Council Work Session on 4/7 and Council meetings on 4/14 and 4/28. C. On 4/8 I met with the branch manager and circulation lead from Northtown Library to plan for new delivery process utilizing wheeled carts instead of book bins. D. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 4/17. E. I met with the branch managers and circulation lead staff of ACL for the quarterly Public Service meeting on 4/24. F. I met with Tony Carlson, Betty Robbins, and Kay Reiners to dedicate the book shelves donated by the Friends in memory of Connie Carlson. G. I met with Joe Kloiber to discuss the 2015 budget. H. Staff participated in the Tornado Awareness drill on 4/23; they secured the building and moved everyone to safe shelter in approximately 2 minutes. I. Staff began selling portable storage drives to the public on April 1. VIII. GRANTS st A. Third quarter 2013-2014 expenses under the 21 Century Community Learning Centers grant were submitted for reimbursement. st B. Bethany and I attended the 21 Century Advisory Council meeting on 4/14. ISD 13 has submitted a proposal for the next round of grants. The next round will build upon the thth success with elementary-aged students and focus attention on 6 through 12 grade students.
