SUBJECT: Adult Services April 2014 Operational Report

I.Adult Programs
a.The Library Book Club, facilitated by Renee Dougherty, met Wednesday, April 30, to
discuss “One Summer America: 1927” by Bill Bryson. Fourteen adults participated.
b.“Senior Surf”—a beginning computer class for seniors, taught by instructors from the
Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging was held Monday, April 2. Five seniors participated
in the program with many more on a waiting list.
c.“Bike U: Bicycle Maintenance” class was held Saturday, April 5. Twenty-four patrons
attended the class, which was taught by John Ford from Twin Cities Bicycling Club.
d.Friends of the library supplied early 1900’s household and farm items for a display in the
children’s department to tie in with a Maud Hart Lovelace History program, which was
held on Saturday, April 19. Friends members also served as hosts for the event.
e.Interest in Adult Services “passive programming” grows as patrons help assemble jigsaw
puzzles, complete crossword puzzles, and try out various “brain fitness” games.
II.Meetings
a.The Friends of the Columbia Heights Library met Monday, April 7 at Dragon House for
their annual luncheon.
b.Barb met with the Older Adults Programming Workgroup at LSS to discuss fall programs.
III.Projects
a.Anoka County Integrated Waste Management put together a recycling display in the
adult reading room.
b.Mayor Gary Peterson proclaimed April 13-19 as “National Library Week.” The library
celebrated throughout the month of April, asking patrons to fill out a “word bubble”
describing how libraries changed their lives. Nearly 100 patrons participated.
c.Barb selected materials for three at-home patrons, for a total of 44 items.
d.DVDs and supplies were ordered.
e.Weeding continued for adult audiobooks and music CDs.
f.Tax forms continued to be maintained through the end of the month. Many patrons
needed help searching for and printing off forms from the IRS and Minnesota
Department of Revenue tax sites.
g.Summer programming plans were completed and Barb compiled publicity for Heights
Happenings.
h.Friends President Kay Reiners and Library Director Renee Dougherty met with Tony
Carlson, Connie Carlson’s husband, for a photo session recognizing the wooden book
displays for new books that were purchased as a memorial to Connie, who had been a
Friend of the library for many decades and served as the group’s secretary.
IV.Volunteers
a.Seven adult volunteers completed 50 hours of volunteer time—delivering materials to
at-home patrons, pricing sale books, refilling the book sale cart, serving as “Reading
Buddies,” and “Conversation Circle” facilitators, and completing various tasks at the
library.
