CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: March 2014 Operational Report DATE: March 31, 2014 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. NSI/Horwitz performed regular inspection and filter changes on the HVAC system on 3/20. B. Fidelity Building Services buffed Activity and Staff room floors on 3/28. II. COLLECTION A. Weekly book orders were placed. Adult selections were made from the December issues of Kirkus Reviews and the January issue of Library Journal. Adult paperback fiction and bestsellers were added. Juvenile selections were made from the December issues of Booklist and Kirkus and the February issue of School Library Journal. Replacement and additional copies of popular children’s titles were added. B. Reports of books, movies, and music with multiple holds were reviewed weekly; additional copies were purchased as needed. C. Weeding, using the Collection HQ “collection check” report was completed in adult nonfiction 780-793. Romance paperbacks were weeded for condition and use. Each week reports of COH “orphan” copies remaining in the Anoka County Library catalog were reviewed and weeded based on condition and estimation of probable future use. III. PROGRAMS A. A Storyteller shared African and American folk tales at a program on 3/1. B. The Friends met on 3/3. C. The Library Board met on 3/5. D. Five toddler storytimes were offered. E. Four preschool storytimes were offered. F. A drama class from Columbia Heights High School assisted with storytimes on 3/17 and 3/18. Mayor Gary Peterson was a guest reader at storytime on 3/25. G. Anoka County Child and Teen checkups staff distributed information to parents and children at the 3/18 storytime. H. A family storytime was offered on the evening of 3/11. I. A writing class taught by an instructor from the Loft Literary Center was offered on 3/11. J. Staff from the Minnesota Department of Human Services shared information about the Telephone Equipment Distribution (TED) program which provides long-term loans of telephone equipment for those with hearing, speaking, or physical disabilities on 3/19. K. A LEGO building program for youth was held on 3/19. L. Games @ the Library were held on 3/20 and 3/21. M. An interactive Rube Goldberg marble machine building program was held on 3/22. N. One examination was proctored for an adult from Bellevue University on 3/28. O. The adult non-fiction book club met on 2/21 to share books read by participants. P. The adult fiction book club met on 3/36 to discuss The Tale of Halcyon Crane by Wendy Webb. Q. Brain fitness puzzles and games were made available for adults to use in the library to enhance memory, focus, and cognitive function. R. Bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School (ICS), Adventure Club, Mini-Adventure Club, and ECFE. S. Four classes from ICS visited to borrow books. T. Tax forms were displayed throughout the month. U. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. V. Adult volunteers contributed 50 hours of service, serving as reading “buddies” for adults, pricing and stocking the sale cart, pulling materials for weeding review, and delivering materials to homebound patrons. IV. STAFF Bethany attended a Community Baby Shower at the Early Childhood Family Education A. Center on 3/6. B. Bethany met with the early literacy team of the Anoka County Library on 3/18. Library staff met with a representative from ICMA for updates on retirement savings C. plans available to city employees. D. Due to illness and injuries (non-work related) we were short-staffed during a number of shifts this month. I will be re-examining part-time staffing based on employee availability and workload and may adjust the part-time schedule as necessary. Barb participated in the MELSA adult programming interest group on 3/25. E. V. FOUNDATION The Library Foundation met on 3/5 and 3/20 to plan fundraising events for 2014. They A. are unable to host a beer tasting fundraiser in 2014 so will focus their efforts on their traditional Spaghetti Dinner and Holiday Film fundraisers. VI. MISC A. The Library Task Force met on 3/24 and 3/31 to discuss next steps and to receive a report from Mayor Peterson on the status of the Northeast Business Center negotiations. B. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 3/6. C. I submitted nformation for the state library annual report was submitted on 3/28. D. I met with the director, maintenance supervisor, and delivery driver of the Anoka County Library on 3/31 to discuss plans for a new way of handling delivery of materials. VII. GRANTS VIII.
