HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Barb TO: Renee Dougherty, Library Director FROM: Barb Kondrick, Adult Services Librarian SUBJECT: Adult Services March 2014 Operational Report DATE: March 31, 2014 I.Adult Programs a.The Library Book Club, facilitated by Renee Dougherty, met Wednesday, March 26, to discuss “The Tale of Halcyon Crane” by Wendy Webb. Fifteen adults participated. b.The Nonfiction Book Club, facilitated by Barb Kondrick and Catherine Vesley, met Friday, Mar. 21 to discuss books that participants recently read. Ten adults participated. c.The Loft Writing Class, “Get Past Your Fear of the Blank Page,” paid for with Legacy Funding through MELSA, was held Tuesday, March 11. Fourteen adults participated. Comments for this first-time writing program at Columbia Heights were very positive. Participants asked for future writing programs on various topics. d.Adult Services is developing “passive” programming, featuring Brain Fitness Games for patrons to use in the library. The games and puzzles, designed by scientists to enhance memory, focus, and cognitive skills, were obtained through Anoka County Library and MELSA. Funding is provided by the Brain Fitness Project and supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Alzheimer’s Association. Besides trying out the Brain Fitness games, a number of patrons have been stopping by regularly to help assemble a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle in the east room. II.Meetings a.The Friends of the Columbia Heights Library met Monday, Mar. 3. Eight members attended. Friends have a balance of $1070.70, including $220 remaining in Connie Carlson’s memorial fund. Members assist in sorting, pricing materials, and refilling the booksale cart. Friends will serve at a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the Lighthouse on Friday, June 20. Metal nameplates for six wooden book displays, purchased as a memorial for Connie Carlson, have arrived. A staff member from Blaine Sportswear and Awards is coming to the library to install the nameplates. Rita Norberg reported that she participated in an “Old-timers Interview” history project at Columbia Heights High School and encouraged other Friends to participate. b.Barb attended MELSA’s Adult Programming Interest Group meeting Tuesday, Mar. 25. c.Barb attended a webinar on selection tools for AV materials through Midwest Tape. III.Projects a.The March/April Bulletin Board theme is “Like Your Library on Facebook.” b.Barb selected materials for seven at-home patrons, for a total of 50 items. c.DVDs and supplies were ordered. d.Weeding continued for adult audiobooks and music CDs. e.Tax forms continue to be maintained. Late changes in Minnesota tax laws affect some of our patrons, who may need help accessing updated forms and instructions online. IV.Volunteers a.Nine volunteers completed 50 hours of volunteer time—delivering materials to at-home patrons, pricing sale books, refilling the book sale cart, serving as reading “Buddies,” and completing various tasks at the library.
