SUBJECT: Adult Services February Operational Report

I.Programs
a.The Library Book Club, facilitated by Renee Dougherty, met Wednesday, Feb. 26, to
discuss The Book Thief by Marcus Zuzak. Fourteen adults participated.
b.The Nonfiction Book Club, facilitated by Barb Kondrick, met Friday, Feb. 21 and
discussed books that participants had read during the past month. Four adults
participated—despite some very harsh weather.
c.Winter Jackets Reading Program for Grownups, age 17 and older, ended Friday, Feb.

28. Participant’s book reviews were added to a “Book Reviews” 3-ring notebook and
also posted on the library’s Facebook page for other readers to peruse. The total
number of entries was 199.
II.Meetings
a.The Friends of the Columbia Heights Library met Mon. Feb. 3. Eight members attended.
There is a balance of $1131.30 plus approximately $350 remaining in Connie Carlson’s
memorial fund. Friends continue to assist in sorting, pricing materials, and refilling the
booksale cart. Friends discussed doing a membership drive in the fall and ideas for
participating in the Jamboree.
b.Barb attended the ACL Older Adults (55+) Work Group meeting with Jill Smith and
several other ACL adult services librarians at LSS on Wednesday, Feb. 26 to discuss
programming options for fall to include Loft writing classes, art classes and computer
literacy. There was discussion about developing significant volunteer opportunities for
55+ adults. Further discussion and planning will continue.
c.Barb attended training for the Gale Virtual Reference and National Geographic
databases. Results in both databases are complete books on great topics including
animals, countries of the world, etc. Gale Virtual Reference currently has access to
approximately 1000 books that will be available for the next six months. At that time,
patron usage will be evaluated and a decision made as to which books to purchase for
that database in the future.
III.Projects
a.February’s bulletin board theme is the Winter Jackets – Winter Reading Program.
b.Barb and Stacey revised and redesigned application forms and materials for Buddy Up
and Read.
c.Barb selected materials for one at-home patron a total of 14 items.
d.Supplies were ordered.
e.Weeding continued for adult audiobooks and music CDs.
f.Staff attended a demonstration of a Scanpro 800 Microfilm Scanner on Friday, Feb. 14.
g.Tax forms arrived and a distribution area was set up.
IV.Volunteers
a.Volunteers completed 32 1/2 hours of volunteer time—delivering materials to at-home
patrons, pricing sale books, refilling the book sale cart, serving as reading “Buddies,” and
completing various tasks at the library.
