CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: December 2013 Operational Report DATE: January 6, 2014 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Orkin did a regular inspection and preventative treatment for pests on 12/2. B. Fidelity Building Services buffed the Activity and Staff room floors on 12/3. C. Dalco performed preventative maintenance on the roof on 12/5. D. NSI/Horwitz inspected the HVAC system and changed filters on 12/18. II. COLLECTION A. Weekly book orders were placed. Adult selections were made from the September issues of Library Journal, and October issues of Booklist, Kirkus, and Library Journal. Juvenile selections were made from the August and September issues of Booklist and Kirkus. Adult mass market paperbacks, large print, and popular fiction titles were also ordered. B. Reports of books, movies, and music with multiple holds were reviewed weekly; additional copies were purchased as needed. C. Last copy weeding of books was done weekly. Weeding, using the Collection HQ “collection check” was completed in adult nonfiction 641-699 and in young adult (YA) fiction. III. PROGRAMS A. The Friends of the Library met on 12/2. During December the Friends presented six wooden display racks to the Library in memory of Connie Carlson. The wooden racks will be used to display new books in the Adult Reading Room. The Friends sorted, counted, and delivered Project Bookshelf donations to SACA. They also began weekly maintenance of the book sale cart, pricing items and refreshing the display B. McPhail Center for Music presented a “Sing, Play, Learn” storytime on 12/3. This program was funded through the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. C. The Library Board meeting scheduled for 12/4 was cancelled due to inclement weather. D. Special December storytimes featuring Sock Monkey were offered at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on 12/10. E. The adult Book Club met for a holiday celebration and book exchange on 12/18. F. An informational session about MNSURE and the Affordable Care Act requirements was offered by Health Access Minnesota on 12/20 and a navigator helped participants sign up for health insurance after the presentation. The 12/17 session was cancelled because the presenter was double-booked. G. The Non-Fiction Book Club met on 12/20 to share books read in the last month. H. Bethany presented a storytime and library information at the ECFE Family Center on 12/20, in lieu of a family group field trip to the library. I. Book Warms, the winter reading program for children and teens, began on 12/21. J. Youth Read Down, a program to allow kids to reduce library fines through active reading, was offered 12/23 through 1/4. K. A “Build Your Own City” program was offered on 12/27. L. A new version of the library catalog, Enterprise, was “soft” launched on 12/10; new and old catalogs were available on the ACL website through the month of December with the old catalog removed on 1/6/2014. The new catalog has a simplified search function similar to Google. It will allow users to search and directly download ebooks and e-audio from within the catalog and allow the creation of custom lists to track books to-be read. ACL also intends to implement online fine payments through the new catalog. M. Seven bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School (ICS), Adventure Club, and Mini-Adventure Club. N. Four classes from ICS visited to borrow books. O. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. P. Adult volunteers pulled materials for weeding review, delivered materials to homebound patrons, cleaned videos and audiobook discs, served as reading “buddies” for adults, priced and stocked sale cart items, and delivered Project Bookshelf donations to SACA. IV. STAFF A. New Library Clerk Renee Rewitzer began on 12/2. She was trained in the Civic Plus website management system on 12/5. She continues to learn her new responsibilities and has smoothly transitioned from Page to Clerk. B. Bethany Grabow met with the committee planning Anoka County Library Summer Reading on 12/6. C. Bethany presented information about library services for young children and new parents at the ECFE Community Baby Shower on 12/12. D. Staff attended the City Holiday party on 12/10 in shifts so that the library could remain open. E. Barb Kondrick provided chat reference through AskMN on 12/4 and 12/18. F. Library Page Andrew Hester successfully completed his probationary period. G. Staff shared a potluck lunch on 12/31 to celebrate a successful 2013. V. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation met on 12/4 to finalize plans for the film fundraiser on 12/15. They also prepared a direct mailing describing their fundraising goals and extending a personal invitation to the movie to a select group of past and prospective donors. Attendance at the movie was very good and the Foundation has received a number of year-end donations. VI. MISC A. I met with the City Manager for my 6-month review. B. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 12/5 and 12/19, and participated in a 12/9 conference call regarding the article about the Library and County Boards in the Anoka County Record. C. On 12/4 I met with a sales representative from Unibind who demonstrated a binding and lamination system for archiving reports and books. VII.
