CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: November 2013 Operational Report DATE: December 2, 2013 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. The windows were washed on 11/21. B. Public Works replaced bulbs in exterior light fixtures. C. Excel Energy was alerted to malfunctioning streetlights on Jackson St. and in the alley between Jackson and Quincy. II. COLLECTION A. Weekly book orders were placed. Adult selections were made from the August and September issues of Booklist, Kirkus, and Library Journal. Juvenile selections were made from the April and July issues of Kirkus, the June and August issues of Booklist, and the June, July, August, and September issues of School Library Journal. Adult non-fiction new editions and large print books were ordered. B. Reports of titles with multiple holds were reviewed weekly; additional copies were purchased as needed. C. Last copy weeding of books was done weekly. Weeding, using the Collection HQ “collection check” was completed in adult nonfiction 600-640 and in J394-J398. III. PROGRAMS A. Heading Home Anoka provided a display for Homelessness Awareness Month and collected donations of new socks and slippers. B. The Library Board met on 11/6 with all members in attendance. C. The Friends met on 10/4. D. Library staff tracked all reference interactions during the week of 11/4-11/9 as part of the final MELSA crossover survey of 2013. E. The final session of R.E.A.D. Dogs was cancelled due to the lack of a tutor/dog team. F. A class from Metro North Adult Basic Education received a library tour and orientation on 11/6. G. An orientation to ebooks class was held on 11/8. H. The Police Department hosted “Coffee with a Cop” for library visitors on 11/12. I. Barb Kondrick visited a GED class at the Adult Basic Education Center to promote library services on 11/13. J. The adult Nonfiction Book Club met on 11/15. K. One session of preschool storytime was offered. L. Five Head Start classes visited for storytime and a tour of the children’s department. M. Eights bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School (ICS), Adventure Club, Mini-Adventure Club, and a Valley View teacher. N. Four classes from ICS visited to borrow books. O. I met with the Adult Book Club to discuss Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger on 11/25. P. To observe National Games Week and provide programming during Thanksgiving week school recesses, Games at the Library was held on 11/25, 11/26, and 11/27. Q. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. R. Adult volunteers pulled materials for weeding review, delivered materials to homebound patrons, cleaned videos and audiobook discs, served as reading “buddies” for adults, and priced and stocked sale cart items. IV. STAFF A. Clerk Ramon Gomez’s final day was 11/1; staff said farewell at a breakfast at Fat Nat’s Eggs. B. Bethany Grabow met with the Anoka County Library Summer Reading Program to begin planning for 2014. C. Barb Kondrick provided chat reference through AskMN on 11/6 and 11/20. D. I conducted a six-month performance evaluation of Adult Services Librarian Barb Kondrick. E. Michelle Wermerskirchen began as Library Aide on 11/19. F. Stacey Hendren met with the Safety Committee on 11/20. G. Kelly Olson participated in the selection of the city employee of the year on 11/26. V. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation did not meet in November. VI. MISC A. Linda Magee and I reviewed applicants for the open Clerk position on 11/5 and selected four candidates to be interviewed on 11/13. The position was offered to Renee Rewitzer. B. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 10/21. C. On 11/26 I attended a webinar with Anoka County Library selectors featuring enhancements to the Collection HQ software service. VII.
