CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: October 2013 Operational Report DATE: October 31, 2013 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Dalco Roofing performed the annual roof inspection on 10/1 and recommended re- caulking at roof penetrations and parapet edge to prevent leakage. Work will be scheduled in November. B. Window blinds were removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. C. Orkin performed a bi-monthly pest inspection and preventative treatment on 10/3. D. The windows were washed on 10/10. E. Fidelity Building Services stripped and waxed the Activity and Staff room floors on 10/29. II. COLLECTION A. Weekly book orders were placed. Adult selections were made from the June and July issues of Booklist, Kirkus, and Library Journal; juvenile selections were made from the May issues of Kirkus and Booklist. Adult non-fiction collection development was completed for section 000 and adult paperbacks were ordered. Juvenile replacements and additional titles were purchased. B. Reports of titles with multiple holds were reviewed weekly; additional copies were purchased as needed. C. Last copy weeding of books was done weekly. Weeding, using the Collection HQ “collection check” was also completed in adult nonfiction 500s. III. PROGRAMS A. Chris Niskanen presented a program on his book, The Minnesota Book of Skills, on 10/1. B. The Library Board met on 10/2; actions were taken to approve the 2014 holiday closures and a quarterly fine read-down program for youth. C. A Library Board member attended the ACCAP Head Start Parent meeting to share information about library services and programs for children. D. The Friends met on 10/7. E. A class from Metro North Adult Basic Education received a library tour and orientation on 10/16. F. Mad Science of Minnesota presented a “Science of Toys” program on 10/17 and a “Radical Robots” program on 10/18 during the Education Minnesota Conference recess. G. An adult Nonfiction Book Club met for the first time on 10/18. H. Local author John Cox presented a program based on his book, Gettysburg: A People’s History, on 10/23. I. Two sessions of preschool storytime were presented by Kelly Olson and three were presented by new Children’s Librarian Bethany Grabow this month. J. Four sessions of Baby Read/Baby Grow were presented by ISD 13 parent educator Chris Buzzetta. K. Anoka County Child and Teen Checkups program staff presented information to parents and childcare providers at the 10/15 Storytime and the 10/24 Baby Read/Baby Grow program. L. Teen Read Week was celebrated with a favorite books poster contest. M. R.E.A.D. Dogs was offered on 10/7, 10/14, 10/21, and 10/28. N. Five bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School (ICS) and a Minneapolis teacher. O. Four classes from ICS visited to borrow books. P. I met with the Adult Book Club for a discussion of The Round House by Louise Erdrich on 10/30. Q. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. R. Adult volunteers pulled materials for weeding review, delivered materials to homebound patrons, cleaned videos and audiobook discs, served as reading “buddies” for adults, and priced and stocked sale cart items. IV. STAFF A. Clerk Ramon Gomez interviewed for a Police Clerk Typist position and spent an afternoon observing there before accepting a job offer. He submitted his resignation effective 11/1. I met with Ramon for an informal exit interview on 10/31. B. I conducted performance reviews for Pages Andrew Hester and Winnifred Coyne at their 6-month anniversaries of employment. C. Library Aide Candice Marsh resigned effective 10/8; we met for an informal exit interview to review her experience and recommendations for the position. D. Stacey Hendren met biweekly with the police department group discussing Communicating Effectively for Dummies. E. Barb Kondrick and I attended the Minnesota Library Association conference on 10/10 and 10/11. F. Bethany Grabow began as Children’s Librarian on 10/14. G. Kelly Olson presented outstanding preschool storytimes on 10/1 and 10/8. H. Bethany and I interviewed two current employees (Page) for the open Aide position. A hiring decision will be made in early November. V. FOUNDATION A. I met with the Foundation on 10/2 to review the spaghetti dinner fundraiser; to prepare for the December film fundraiser; and to discuss ways to inform community members of the Foundation’s mission. VI. MISC A. I met with the team planning the implementation of the Sirsi-Dynix Enterprise catalog upgrade on 10/1. B. I presented an overview of the proposed 2014 Library budget at a Council work session on 10/7. C. I had a conversation with Finance Director about Information Services department support of library patron internet access on 10/7. D. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 10/24.
