HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Barb TO: Renee Dougherty, Library Director FROM: Barb Kondrick SUBJECT: Adult Services October Operational Report DATE: October 30, 2013 I.Programs a.The Library Book Club met Wednesday, October 30, and discussed “The Round House” by Louise Erdrich. Fifteen adults participated. b.A new, Nonfiction Book Club, facilitated by Catherine Vesley and Barb, met Friday, Oct. 18, and discussed participant’s interests, potential titles to read and discuss, and alternative book club formats. Thirteen adults participated. c.Author Chris Niskanen (Legacy-funded program) gave a presentation on his new book, The Minnesota Book of Skills: Your Guide to Smoking Whitefish, Sauna Etiquette, Tick Extraction, and More. Thirteen adults attended. d.Author John Cox spoke on the Battle of Gettysburg and his book, Gettysburg : a history for the people, on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Twenty-three adults attended. e.Barb conducted a library orientation and tour, Oct. 16, for 13 Adult Basic Education Students, some of whom were working on obtaining their GEDs and studying for the Citizenship Exam. Three of those students signed up for Buddy Up and Read. Approximately half of the students registered for library cards. All of the students were also English Language Learners. II.Meetings and Conferences a.The Friends of the Library met Monday, Oct. 7 at the Dragon House. b.Barb attended the MLA Conference in St. Cloud on October 10-11. She attended the “Conference Within a Conference: Talkin’ bout My Generation” sessions on library services for Baby Boomers and other active older adults. Friends President Kay Reiners also attended the conference on Friday, and attended sessions designed for Friends and Library Trustees. c.Barb met with Jill Smith, Anoka County Adult Services Manager, to discuss potential programming using Legacy funding at Columbia Heights Library. III.Projects a.The monthly library theme, “October is Polish Heritage Month @ Your Library,” included an exhibit of Polish history posters, souvenirs and artifacts, sponsored and displayed by the Sister Cities organization. Sister Cities also donated seven house plants for a drawing. b.Barb provided AskMN online reference service twice in October. c.At Home Service: Barb selected materials and set up deliveries for five at-home patrons. d.Supplies and DVDs were ordered. IV.Volunteers a.Volunteers completed 28 ½ hours of volunteer time—delivering materials to at-home patrons, pricing sale books, refilling the book sale cart, completing various tasks at the library and serving as reading “Buddies.” b.More volunteers are needed for Buddy Up and Read. We currently have two active “Buddies” and two clients being served—and four potential clients on a waiting list.
