I.Programs
a.The Library Book Club met Wednesday, September 25, and discussed “The Age of
Miracles” by Karen Thompson Walker. Thirteen adults participated.
b.An “Understanding Medicare” class was presented to 16 adults on Wednesday,
September 25, by the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging in partnership with Senior
Linkage Line.
II.Meetings
a.The Friends of the Library met Monday, September 9. The group voted to pay for
registration for the Friends president to attend the MLA (Minnesota Library Association)
conference in St. Cloud, Friday, October 11, 2013.
b.Sad news, longtime Friends member and secretary, Connie Carlson, passed away on
Tuesday, September 10, 2013. Her obituary (Connie R. [Sugden] Carlson) can be
accessed through the Startribune.com website. Memorials are being directed to
Columbia Heights Friends of the Library.
III.Projects
a.Supplies, including two, lightweight folding tables, were ordered through DEMCO and
Office Depot.
b.At Home Service: Barb selected materials and set up deliveries for at-home patrons.
c.Barb met with Delynn Mulligan, Senior Citizens Coordinator, to discuss ways to
collaborate with Columbia Heights Senior Services.
d.The Monthly library theme, “September is Library Card Sign-up Month @ Your Library,”
included an incentive for new library card sign-ups by Columbia Heights residents. Each
new Columbia Heights patron received a coupon good for one free book, up to a $5.00
value, from the book sale cart. 25 coupons were redeemed, for a total of $37.00.
e.September adult book displays included “If You Love Mysteries…” and “Read Banned
Books: Celebrating the Freedom to Read, September 23-28, 2013.”
f.Renee and Barb represented the Library at the Latino Arts Festival, Saturday, September
21, at Columbia Heights High School. They spoke with 95 adults and children, who
stopped at the Library’s information table. Mayor Gary Peterson donated to the library,
a book titled, “Hecho in Minnesota: Posters Designed by UNO Branding,” which he
purchased at the event’s Latino Art Exhibit. The book will be added to the Library’s
collection.
IV.Volunteers
a.Volunteers completed 19 hours of volunteer time--delivering books for at-home
patrons, assisting patrons with technology, pricing sale books and refilling the book sale
cart and completing various tasks at the library. A “Buddy Up and Read” volunteer
contacted two, new potential readers. Both “readers” are recent immigrants, who are
working to improve their English language reading skills.
