BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Orkin performed a routine inspection and preventative treatment for pests on 8/1. B. Public works removed 30” shelving and wall displays in the children’s department. C. Mid America Business Systems installed new 84” shelving along the north wall of the children’s department on 8/5. The library received a substantial discount on this purchase by using the State Library contract. D. Exterior windows were washed on 8/2. E. Aid Electric repaired the light fixture in the office. The electrician attempted to replace ballasts in the lobby and determined that the fixtures were too deteriorated to repair. F. National Electric attempted to repair emergency exit signs on the lower level on 8/14. G. Fidelity Services buffed the activity room floor on 8/22. II. COLLECTION A. Regular book orders were placed during the month. Adult selections were made from the March and April issues of Booklist, Kirkus, and Library Journal; juvenile selections were made from the February and March issues of Kirkus and the April issue of School Library Journal. Adult music and audiobooks were added. Videos for children and adults were added. B. Reports of titles with multiple holds were reviewed weekly; additional copies were purchased as needed. C. Last copy weeding of books was done weekly. Weeding, using the Collection HQ “collection check” was completed in adult nonfiction 000-299. Adult mysteries were also reviewed for condition. Weeding of juvenile paperbacks, nonfiction 300s and Easy “S” books was completed. III. PROGRAMS A. The Science Museum presented the “Design-Build-Create” engineering program on 8/3. B. The Library Board met on 8/7 with all members in attendance. C. The Works presented a chemistry program, “Mixing Molecules,” on 8/10. D. Mai Kao facilitated 3 “Kids Club” book groups. E. Teen volunteers were recognized at the City Council meeting and at a reception on 8/12. F. Schiffely Puppets presented a program on 8/13. G. Bulk loans were prepared for ICS. H. Four “Make and Take Monday” craft sessions were held. I. A “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Mayhem” event was held on 8/15. J. MadScience presented a “Bugs!” program on 8/17. K. Mai Kao made a presentation to the new teachers of ISD13 during their city tour. L. I met with the Adult Book Club for discussion of Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. M. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. N. Teen volunteers assisted with the summer reading program and special events; adult volunteers pulled materials for weeding review, checked and cleaned videos, delivered materials to homebound patrons, and assisted patrons in using computers. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Major city-wide internet connectivity issues occurred on 8/9 impacting public internet access at the library. B. The CH 1 public computer failed on 8/29; IS staff are exploring repair/replacement options. V. STAFF A. I conducted a performance evaluation for Page Asiya Hassan on her one-year anniversary of employment. B. Stacey met with the City Safety Committee on 8/14. C. On 8/20 I met with all Pages to establish the work schedule for September 2013- May 2014. D. Library staff held a farewell party for Mai Kao on 8/20. E. Mai Kao visited teachers at Immaculate Conception School on 8/26. F. Barb provided chat reference for AskMN on 8/28. VI. FOUNDATION A. I met with the Foundation on 8/14 to continue planning for the Spaghetti Dinner and to brainstorm potential movies for the December fundraiser. VII. MISC A. Linda Magee and I interviewed five candidates for Children’s Librarian and I conducted second interviews with two finalists. B. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 8/29. C. I submitted two batches of invoices to ISD13 for Summer Reading Program expenses incurred through July 31, 2013. These expenses will be reimbursed from Year Four of the st 21 Century Community Learning Centers grant. $6,320.14 was received 8/5. The final reimbursement for $840.76 is expected soon.
