SUBJECT: Adult Services July Operational Report

I.Programs
a.The Library Book Club met Wednesday, July 31, and discussed “Unbroken” by Laura
Hillenbrand. Fourteen adults participated.
II.Collection Development
a.No CDs, DVDs or audiobooks were ordered this month.
III.Projects
a.Office supplies were ordered from Office Depot and Demco.
b.Barb, Stacey and Ramon met to discuss themes for adult book displays. Stacey
developed a chart to keep track of the various displays.
c.Barb, Renee, Stacey and Ramon started implementing a new daily desk schedule,
designed to help share tasks and provide off-desk work time.
d.At Home Service: Barb selected and set up deliveries for three patrons.
e.Buddy Up and Read: One Friend met with a Buddy to practice reading.
f.Office supplies were ordered from Office Depot and Demco.
g.Stacey obtained missing issues of the Northeaster for the archives.
h.Barb and Renee were interviewed by Margo Ashmore for a Northeaster Newspaper
article about the library.
i.Barb provided a list of popular fiction and “hot” dvds for the Northeaster.
j.Barb and Renee—along with MaiKao—represented the library at the Community Picnic.
The event was declared “best ever” by Library Director Renee Dougherty, with 79 adults
and 96 children stopping at the Library table to visit with staff, “spin the wheel,” and
answer library-related trivia questions.
k.Barb and Renee met with Public Works Director Kevin Hansen and Facilities
Maintenance Supervisor Eric Hanson to discuss custodial and maintenance issues.
l.Stacey set up Outlook calendars to keep track of room reservations for the Library Board
Room and Activity Room.
IV.Training
a.Barb attended a Minitex Webinar for AskMN online reference training.
b.Barb, Stacey and Ramon attending Outlook training. Columbia Heights changed to
Outlook e-mail, beginning July 19.
V.Volunteers
a.Barb met with Kim Johnson, Branch Manager at Rum River Library, to discuss Anoka
County’s adult volunteer program and to tour Rum River Library.
b.A new Volunteer Technology Assistant, Deb Bekele, started on Monday, July 29. She is
currently scheduled to come in on Mondays—the library’s busiest day--from 4-5 p.m. to
assist patrons with computer, printing, and copying questions. Ms. Bekele, who recently
graduated from high school, has been a frequent library user since she was 14, and is
excited about volunteering. Her schedule may change this fall, when she starts college.
Besides English, Ms. Bekele also is fluent in the Amharic language.
