HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013April18CharterCommMinutesCOLUMBIA HEIGHTS CHARTER COMMISSION APRIL 18,2013 CONFERENCE ROOM MINUTES Call to Order The meeting was called to order by President Smith at 7:05 p.m. Introduction of New Member James Guy, new member of the Charter Commission, introduced himself and told members a brief history of his connection to our city, etc. Roll Call Members present: Matt Abel, Lee Bak, James Guy, Roger Johnson, Gregory Sloat, Steve Smith, Charles Tyler, Tim Utz Members absent and excused: Jeff Diehm, Rob Fiorendino, Carolyn Laine, Mike Patiuk Members absent and unexcused: None See status of membership below. Jim Hoeft, City Attorney, and Carole Blowers, Recording Secretary for the commission, were also present. Council Liaison, Tami Diehm, was excused from tonight's meeting. Approval of Tonight's Agenda Motion by Commissioner Able, seconded by Commissioner Tyler to approve tonight's agenda. Motion passed unanimously. Approval of Charter Commission Minutes of January 17, 2013 Motion by Commissioner Abel, seconded by Commissioner Tyler to approve the minutes of the January 17, 2013, Charter Commission meeting as presented. Motion passed unanimously. Status of Membership The Recording Secretary reported the following: • Commissioner Jentsch has been removed by the Chief Judge for his non - attendance • Commissioner James Guy has recently been appointed as a new member • Commissioner Charles Tyler has recently been reappointed • Commissioner Carolyn Laine has recently been reappointed • Commissioner Nancy King has decided not to be reappointed • Commissioner Nicholas Rivers has recently resigned, due to the fact that he has moved out of Columbia Heights. • The commission currently has twelve members and three vacancies. Correspondence The Recording Secretary reported on the correspondence since our last meeting in January. • Typed minutes of the January 17 meeting • Sent Charter Commission annual report to City Clerk and Chief Judge as required by law • Sent letter to Chief Judge regarding reappointment of Charles Tyler and Carolyn Laine; advised the Chief Judge that Nancy King does not wish to be reappointed • Sent Chief Judge application for membership from James Guy • Received orders from Chief Judge reappointing Carolyn Laine and Charles Tyler and appointed James Guy • The Chief Judge removed Commissioner Jentsch from the commission due to his lack of attendance. ® Contacted Chuck Tyler and Carolyn Laine about new oaths need to be signed • James Guy came in to sign oath; sent order to Anoka County • Prepared and sent welcome packet for James Guy • Prepared April 18, 2013, agenda and sent out with January minutes to commission members, City Attorney, City Manager, and Tami Diebm ® Put April 18, 2013, agenda on the city's website and on local cable TV station, and posted it at City Hall • Nicholas Rivers advised me via e -mail that he has moved from Columbia Heights, so therefore can no longer serve on this commission; advised Chief Judge of the same • Prepared new member list and made copies • Prepared correspondence log ® Forwarded e -mail from Tim Utz to President Smith and City Attorney Hoeft; President Smith for their response • Prepared thank you letters to Nancy King and Nicholas Rivers for the president's signatures; sent letters out. New Business The Recording Secretary passed out invitation flyers to everyone present about the upcoming Community Prayer Breakfast on May 8, 2013.
