HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Renee CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: May 2013 Operational Report DATE: June 11, 2013 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. The exterior windows were washed on 5/2 and 5/30. B. Aid Electric replaced ballasts in a number of fluorescent light fixtures and initiated repair of a broken light switch which will be completed when parts become available. C. Carpeting in the Adult Reading Room was replaced on 5/16-5/18. D. Entry mats were cleaned. E. Fidelity buffed the floors in the Activity room and staff break area on 5/23. F. Firenet performed regular inspection and annual maintenance to the fire alarm panel on 5/24. G. Lower level carpeting was cleaned on 5/25. II. COLLECTION A. Regular book orders were placed during the month; selections were made from the December, January, and February issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal and School Library Journal. Popular adult paperbacks were added. Juvenile series replacements and new titles were ordered in advance of summer reading program demand. B. 10-day book requests were reviewed weekly; additional titles were purchased as needed. C. Last copy weeding of books was done weekly. Weeding, per the annual schedule, was completed in the juvenile print collection. D. Adult and juvenile DVDs and adult spoken word CDs were added. III. PROGRAMS A. The Friends met on 5/6. B. The Library Board met on 5/1. C. A special “Sing, Play, Learn” storytime was presented by McPhail Center for Music on 5/14. D. MaiKao staffed two sessions of AskMN online reference. E. A bulk loan was prepared for Mini Adventure Club. F. Elaine met with the Adult Book Club on 5/29 for a discussion of President’s Club by Nancy Gibbs. G. Four kindergarten classes from Valley View Elementary visited for a library tour and special story time. H. Two classes from Immaculate Conception School visited. I. Elaine gave library tours and orientations to two classes of English Language Learners from the Adult Basic Education Center. J. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. K. Teen volunteers were oriented and trained to assist with summer reading program and activities on 5/30. L. I proctored one examination for a student from University of North Dakota. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. I worked with Steve Silverdahl to order computers for the workroom, the children’s clerk typist, and the office. These computers are being replaced because they use an older version of the Windows operating system which will not be supported after 2013. V. STAFF B. Day staff and Library Supervisors attended Anoka County Library Staff Day on 5/16. Jim Tincher presented the keynote address on maximizing library user experience. C. New Pages Winnie Coyne and Andrew Hester completed their training and initial shadowing shifts; they will join the regular schedule in June. D. MaiKao attended the Summer Reading Program training conducted by the Anoka County Library. E. Mai Kao attended the Highland Elementary parent breakfast. F. Mai Kao gave a library tour to new City employees on 5/2. G. Elaine performed essential tasks during my vacation. H. A fantastic crew from Public Works make short work of removing all of the furniture in the Adult Reading Room and then returning it after the carpet was installed. I. All library staff have gone above and beyond the call in removing materials (quarto, reference, fiction, mystery, sci-fi and western collections and non-fiction 000-699) to the Activity room, keeping them in call number order so that they could be retrieved, and then reinstalling them on to Adult Reading shelving after the carpet installation. We will discontinue use of the lowest shelves for ease of both patrons and staff so relabeling of the collections will continue through the summer. VI. FOUNDATION A. I met with the Foundation on 5/1. The Foundation Linder’s fundraiser was held 5/10- 5/13. The group continued to plan the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser. VII. MISC A. Six persons were interviewed for the Adult Services Librarian position on 5/6. Two semifinalists were interviewed a second time. A conditional offer of employment was extended to Barb Kondrick. The conditions were satisfied and Barb accepted the position; she will begin 6/17. B. I prepared and submitted a preliminary 2014 library budget. nd C. Staff tracked reference interactions during 5/6-5/10 as part of the 2 quarter MELSA survey period. The survey tracks number of reference transactions, crossover use of libraries within the metropolitan area, and use of subscription databases to answer reference questions. D. The Library Task Force met on 5/6, met with the City Council on 5/13, and held a celebratory potluck on 5/20. E. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 5/23. F. I met with all part-time Library Pages to establish the work schedule for the summer.
