HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Renee CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TO: Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees FROM: Renee Dougherty, Library Director SUBJECT: April Operational Report DATE: April 29, 2013 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. The sink faucet in the family restroom was replaced by Public Works staff. B. Public Works staff replaced numerous light bulbs and did cosmetic building repair. C. Mai Kao continued to plan for acquisition and installation of 84” shelving in the children’s department. Utilizing the discount available through the state library contract will allow the addition of tall shelving along the entire north wall. D. Fidelity buffed the floors in the Activity room and staff break area. II. COLLECTION A. Regular book orders were placed during the month; selections were made from the November, December, and January issues of Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal and School Library Journal. Popular adult paperbacks were added. Juvenile non-fiction collection development in the 600s and 800s was done. B. 10-day book requests were reviewed weekly; additional titles were purchased as needed. C. Last copy weeding of books was done weekly. Weeding, per the annual schedule, was completed in the juvenile print collection. D. Adult and juvenile DVDs, adult music CDs, and children’s spoken work CDs were added. E. Anoka County Library began floating all library materials on 4/30. Columbia Heights staff celebrated and reviewed the new procedure over root beer floats! III. PROGRAMS A. The Friends met on 4/1. B. The Library Board met on 4/3. C. Baby Read, Baby Grow story times were held weekly. D. Four preschool story times were held. Anoka County Child and Teen Check Ups shared information and gifts at two story times. E. A group from the First Lutheran Afterschool Program visited to tour the library and learn about electronic resources. F. The library celebrated National Library Week by handing out small gifts for adults and children using the library. G. READ Dogs was held on Monday evenings. H. MaiKao staffed the AskMN online reference services for one hour. I. Andrew Hogg from Public Works presented Plant Green, a program on conserving and preserving water resources in residential yards. J. The Sisters Cities sponsored a well-attended program on Polish settlement of Northeast Minneapolis at the dawn of the twentieth century on 4/20. K. Skyscrapers, a science-based program on architecture and construction for elementary- aged children, was also held on 4/20. L. Bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School and ECFE. M. Elaine met with the Adult Book Club on 4/24 for a discussion of State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. N. Four classes from Immaculate Conception School visited. O. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons. P. Federal and state tax forms were displayed through April 22; inventory was taken for the federal distribution program, and remaining forms were recycled. Q. I proctored one examination for a student from North Dakota State University. IV. TECHNOLOGY I negotiated with Information Services staff for the removal and reconnection of the public internet and catalog computers during the carpeting project. V. STAFF A. All daytime staff were trained in the platform and collection available through the 3M Cloud Library. B. MaiKao presented the Baby Read, Baby Grow programs solo because a partner from the school district ECFE program was not available this month. C. New Pages Winnie Coyne and Andrew Hester began training on 4/18. D. The open position of Adult Services Librarian was posted; sixty-five applications were received and reviewed; and six persons were selected for interviews to be conducted on May 6. E. Ramon Gomez and I met for his annual performance evaluation. F. Mai Kao and I attended follow-up training for Collection HQ. G. Mai Kao attended the Valley View School Carnival. H. Stacey attended a meeting of Circulation Lead Workers at Anoka County Libraries. I. Pages continued a major shifting project in the Adult Reading Room in anticipation of carpet installation planned for May. VI. FOUNDATION A. I met with the Foundation on 4/11. Task Force Chair Dave Larson reported on the recommendation to the City Council. The Foundation finalized plans to promote the Linder’s fundraiser and began planning the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser. VII. MISC A. The Library Task Force met on 4/4 and 4/8. The Task Force Chair, Co-Chair and consultant Cindy McCleary presented the recommendation and site selections to the City Council on 4/8. B. I met with consultant Cindy McCleary and Task Force Chair Dave Larson to plan next steps. C. I met with City Manager, Community Development Director, Finance Director and Public Works Director on three occasions to define environmental and financial issues of the three potential library sites identified by the Task Force. D. I met with the Human Resources Director to plan for the hiring of an Adult Services Librarian and again to review applications received. E. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 4/25. F. I attended the quarterly meeting of the managers of the Anoka County branch libraries. G. I was interviewed by reporter Kassie Petermann for an article in the Columbia Heights – Fridley Sun Focus.
