December operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. Fidelity polished and buffed the activity room and break room floors on 12/4.
B. Exterior windows were washed on 12/6.
C. The men’s room toilet was repaired on 12/5.
D. In order to prevent flooding of the lower level through the emergency door during
extreme weather events, new gutters were fabricated and installed on the north side of
building and a metal diverter was installed over the external stairwell.
E. Gutters were also replaced on the southeast side of the building.
F. Furniture (4 loveseats and 2 benches) was removed, reupholstered, and returned on
during the week of 12/10-12/14.
G. NSI/Horwitz did planned maintenance on the HVAC system on 12/26.
II. COLLECTION
A. Regular book orders were placed during the month.
B. 10-day book requests were added weekly.
C. Last copy weeding of books was done weekly.
D. Major shifting of the collection was completed. Non-fiction in the 700s was moved to the
East Room so that all of the materials in this class are in a single location. Science
Fiction/Fantasy and Western hardcover fiction was shifted to expand space for Mystery
hardcover fiction.
III. PROGRAMS
A. The Friends met on 12/3.
B. The Library Board met on 12/5.
C. One bulk loan was prepared Mini-Adventure Club.
D. Mad Science presented a program on 12/8 (Harnessing Heat) and another on 12/27 (Dry
Ice) for elementary-aged children.
E. Elaine met with the Adult Book Club on 12/19 for a holiday celebration and an informal
sharing of favorite books.
F. Six classes from Immaculate Conception School visited.
G. Three ECFE (Early Childhood and Family Education) classes visited for special
storytime and library tours.
H. Materials were selected and delivered to At Home Service patrons.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. Anoka County library staff began modifying the public interface of the catalog to make it
more attractive, functional and visually integrated with the new county library web site.
B. City information services staff have been testing and modifying internet connections to
improve the speed of the three public catalog/electronic database computers.
V. STAFF
A. MaiKao met with the Friends on 12/3. She provided special storytimes for three Early
st
Childhood and Family Education classes. She met with the 21 Century Learning
Communities committee to review programming and results for the second quarter of
2012-13. She participated in the ECFE Community Baby Shower on 12/13.
B. Ramon reduced his working hours during December to care for his newborn son. We
look forward to his return to full-time work in 2013.
C. Stacey, Elaine, Kelly, MaiKao and I attended LEAN Training provided for Anoka
County Library staff. LEAN is an awareness building, efficiency-enhancing program
occurring throughout Anoka County government. Using what we learned, library staff
will be examining our work and getting LEAN in the New Year.
D. Elaine began planning adult programming for 2013, including events on yard care and
water conservation, healthy eating, an author visit, and the adult winter reading program.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. I met with the Foundation on 12/5. The foundation reviewed the results of the film
fundraiser held on 12/2. The fundraiser was very successful largely due to donations
received at the event; the reduced cost to rent the Hitchcock film; and the addition of a
small silent auction.
MISC
A. I participated in a conference call on 12/4 with the library development and statistics
specialist from the State Library and the directors of the three other associate libraries in
the metropolitan area (Stillwater, South Saint Paul, and Bayport.) We discussed how to
count resident and reciprocal borrowers, interlibrary loans, and circulation of electronic
resources for the state annual report.
B. The Library Task Force met on 12/3 and 12/17. The Task Force met with representatives
from Bossardt Corporation, a construction management firm; with Council Member Tami
Diehm to strategize presentation of a recommendation to the Council; and continued to
hone their recommendation regarding a new library.
C. I proctored one examination.
D. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 12/6 and 12/20.
