I.PROGRAMS
a.Classes from Immaculate Conception visited on 10/1, 10/3, 10/23, and 10/25.
b.Bulk loan materials (3bins, 45 books each) for ICS were picked up on 10/4. One
bin (50 books) for Mini Adventures was picked up on 10/5.
c. “Magic for Kids,” a special performance by Norm Barnhart was held in lieu of
storytime on 10/16. We had our highest attendance for our fall session of
programs as this event.
d.Baby Read, Baby Grow ended on 10/22. The next session will begin again in
March 2013. Parents have expressed interest and requested baby story times be
additionally offered during the winter months. With the programming schedule
already set, this will be explored as a possibility in the future.
e.The R.E.A.D. Dog program ended on 10/29. Two teams volunteered for 5 weeks
on Monday nights during this session.
f.“Rainbow Magic Fun,” a program themed around the Daisy Meadows’ popular
chapter book series was held on 10/18 and 10/27.
g.Teen Read Week was celebrated from 10/15-10/31. Teens were asked to write
book reviews of their favorite or current reads. We also had a library-wide
scavenger hunt they could participate in.

II.COLLECTION
a.Book orders were placed through the following selection tools: Kirkus Reviews
5/15/12, 6/1/12; Booklist 5/15/12, 6/1 & 6/15/12; School Library Journal 5/12.
Orders were additionally place in the following areas: spoken word, adds, board
books, non-fiction, and series.
b.Weeding was conducted in the following areas: J Fic L-N, Easy M, and J921-932.
c.A request will be submitted for transfer of funds from Book/CD Set (2187) to
Compact Discs (2185) in order to add new music CDs to the collection.
III.PROJECTS
a.Planning and preparation for November programs has begun. These programs
include: the Pokémon Party and Teen Manga Café.
b.Children’s programs for December, January, and February are scheduled.
Contracts were sent out and program details will be printed in Heights Happenings.
c.The Winter Reading Events Calendar (Dec, Jan, and Feb) is being finalized and
will be sent to print in early November.
d.I have begun the Collection Check report for the department’s fiction generated
by Collection HQ. This list looks for books the catalog reports have been sitting
on the shelf for over 4 years. In order to clean up our collection and make
circulation more efficient, I am checking to see if these books are missing
altogether or whether they need to be weeded because of low circulation.
IV.GRANTS, MEETINGS, COMMUNITY
a.Friends of the Library meeting on 10/1.
b.Minnesota Library Association Conference on 10/3 and 10/4.
i.I attended the following workshops at this conference: Beyond Summer
Reading: Programming for School-Aged Patrons; Summer Reading
Programs: Breaking New Ground; 50 in 60 Book Blast; [un] Writing the
“Stereotype” Choosing Books for Young African-American Readers; 10
Quick and Painless Steps to Effective Advocacy for Libraries; Teens
Know Best (Especially about the Best YA Books); Talk Sing Read Write
Play: Storytime, the Next Generation. A summary report was also
submitted to the City Council.
c.Columbia Heights High School Family Night on 10/5.
V.STAFF
a.Pages maintained the collection through shelving, weeding, processing new
books, updating displays, and searching for titles on the Collection HQ Check list.
They assisted in program set up and tear down, preparing for Teen Read Week,
registering participants in special programs, cutting out letters for bulletin boards,
and putting together selection tool lists.
i.Rachel Meyers and Michelle Wermerskirchen staffed the R.E.A.D. Dog
program Monday evenings. Their help in registering children, assisting
the trainer/dog teams, and transitioning the readers contributed
significantly to the success of this program.
b.Library Aide: Because we are short-staffed, Candice has additionally picked up a
section of the collection to shelf read. She assisted in Teen Read Week,
Halloween storytime, worked on publicity, filed paperwork, Activity Room
reservations on Groupwise for programs, helped set up for storytime, and updated

program attendance for 21 Century Grant reports.
c.Children’s Clerk: Kelly completed her month end, updated the book fund balance
report, and worked on magazines. She also assisted to preparation for Teen Read
Week, Halloween storytime, sent out program contracts, bulk loans, rescheduling
ICS school visits, ordered and received books, and submitted purchase requests.
She is also currently assigned a shelf reading section.
